‘Self conscious’: Shane Warne’s personal battle revealed

It was a romance no-one saw coming: A larrikin Aussie cricketer and a glamourous Hollywood star. Seven years after Shane Warne’s relationship with Liz Hurley ended, the cricketing legend has revealed feelings for his ex and what made him “self conscious” about being in the spotlight.

Shane Warne is happy to take one for the team so to speak when it comes to his hair.

The Aussie cricketing great has long born the brunt of people’s jokes for being open about the fact he had gone under the knife with a hair transplant.

“I think I have helped so it is cool to do it rather than that stigma of being known as the guy who has had his hair done,” Warne told Confidential.

“Some people it doesn’t really affect them, they go bald and they don’t really care. Some people get insecure about it. Some people wear a hat out because they worry about it. My crown was going bald so I had hair by hair strand by strand replacement and I feel a lot better.”

Technology, Warne added, has changed dramatically over recent years.

“It is not like the 60s when people used to stick on the toupee and people would take the micky because they could tell, it is not like that anymore,” Warne explained. “I go in for a haircut and they think it is not my hair. It is my hair, I re-grew my own hair, which is why it feels so good.”

The 50-year-old father of three had his surgery more than a decade ago and for a long time was known as the Advanced Hair, Yeah Yeah guy.

Many of his sporting mates have also had the procedure, including AB de Viliers, Jacques Kallis, Brendon Goddard and Ben Cunnington.

He is an ambassador for the company, which has launched a free website – hairloss.com.au – to provide hair loss advice during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Before I would always trying to hide my crown, where I was thinning and going bald,” he explained. “I was so self conscious about it. I would go out and keep putting my hand there or touching it or I would wear a hat because I didn’t like it. Now, I have a shower and it is good fun to style my hair and I am not worried about my crown. I feel more confident because I was worried, a lot of people aren’t but I was.”

During the COVID-19 shutdown, Warne has been busy working on a podcast with Fox Sports, as well as a new documentary that was due to start filming before the pandemic.

“I want to get my motorbike licence, that is something else I want to do,” he said.

“I am pretty happy with where I am at the moment. Myself and my son, we are starting up our own podcast as well and I am about to start up a Youtube channel and all sorts of things.”

Warne meanwhile earlier this month revealed he still carries a torch for his former fiance, British actor and model Elizabeth Hurley.

Warne and Hollywood star Hurley were an international golden couple for the three years they dated between 2010-13.

“It is quite sad it is over because I still care about her deeply and she is a wonderful person,” the playboy said in his six-part Fox Sports series, A Week With Warnie.

Warne, 50, is known as much for being a cricket great as he is for his personal life, mixing in international circles with movie stars and chart-topping singers.
