Russell Crowe has been doing the media rounds of late to promote his upcoming ‘psychological thriller’ but critics have been blocked from seeing the film prior to its release.

In a move not often seen by major film studios, Unhinged is not being made available for reviews and instead going directly into its theatrical rollout on July 30 (however it’s understood that date may yet be pushed back due to worldwide COVID restrictions).

According to one film industry veteran, the decision to keep a flick from the eyes of critics can mean that the studio is concerned about poor reviews.

“However that’s not always the case … particularly at the moment given the restrictions on screenings in theatres,” they told Confidential.

A rep for the film’s Aussie distributor StudioCanal said the decision to withhold the movie from journalists was triggered by the US release date’s delay to August.

Confidential ran an eye over the trailer and, based on the 90 second snippet, the flick centres around Crowe‘s ‘unhinged’ male protagonist who finds himself cut off in traffic by a woman played by South African newcomer Caren Pistorius.

He subsequently stalks and terrorises the woman, her young son and the woman‘s partner seemingly throughout the film – a disturbing rampage which culminates in a fiery and very bloody showdown.

Crowe, meanwhile, has been limiting his media commitments to just journalists and presenters he is ‘comfortable’ on his publicity trail.

Falling into that category; KIIS FM‘s Kyle Sandilands and Nine’s Richard Wilkins as well as Channel 10 with Crowe appearing briefly on The Project last week.
