Reality TV star Grant Crapp, 24, has lost his Malua Bay home in the devastating bushfires.
The electrician told Confidential that he’s heartbroken and spent New Year’s Day assessing the fire damage to the three-bedroom property on the South Coast.
“It’s completely gone and wiped out. I’ve lost everything. The best way to describe it is it’s like an atomic bomb has dropped and just wiped out everything, just so depressing and devastating you know?” he said.
“It was a bad day on New Year’s, I came home and saw people laying on the road crying because their properties had collapsed, animals were burned and running around in shock, it’s intense.”
The former Love Island winner shared heartbreaking photos of the extensive property damage on social media. He and his girlfriend Lucy Cartwright purchased the $770,000 home in February last year and renovated it themselves.
The ceiling collapsed and floors were burned, with Crapp estimating the cost of damage to be at least $300,000.
“We lost round yards, stables, I lost thousands of dollars in stock from my sporting brand Royal Apparel. I lost my snowboards it’s all gone,” he said.
“To be fair, my house is actually in a half decent situation compared to a lot of the other people around here.”
An estimated 15 people have died and more than 1000 homes have been destroyed in the NSW bushfires. Millions of animals have also perished around the country.
“It is hard because our entire community has really copped it right now and as we speak, the fires are still burning right now,” Crapp said.
Crapp and Cartwright have taken in two animals, a severely burned horse and llama which they found wandering around their damaged property.
“They might die, they’re in so much shock. We’ve taken them in, it’s so intense,” he said.
Crapp and Cartwright have been advised to evacuate the area as the Rural Fire Service is anticipating even more damage this weekend as temperatures soar.
“We’ve been told by the police and RFS that it’s going to be worse on Saturday, some people think it’s over but the wind is getting it worse,” he said.
“I may go to my dad’s place in Batehaven and go to the beach there and try to get away from the property but then again I want to defend the family home so I’m in two minds.”
