Sunday Confidential can reveal the man behind films Driving Miss Daisy, Ladies In Black and Breaker Morant was admitted to RPA Hospital on March 12 after having a heart attack while, sources report, abseiling.
It was at the RPA the vocally robust 78-year-old Birchgrove resident was overheard telling friends including director Baz Lurhman about his health woes and lamenting having to withdraw from a conference in Brisbane the following day.

Following his admission, Confidential believes Beresford was transferred to Strathfield Private Hospital where he underwent open heart surgery.
The confirmed workaholic, who has had back to back projects and in still in demand, could not be reached for comment regarding his status but sources indicated he was on the mend and being well cared for.
Beresford is married to novelist Virginia Duigan, the sister of film director John Duigan (The Year My Voice Broke, TV miniseries Vietnam and Sirens).
Beresford and Duigan’s Birchgrove, Sydney, suburb was recently in the news following reports they and neighbours were at odds with government’s plans to build the proposed six-lane Western Harbour Tunnel under their harbourfront homes.
Beresford’s Louisa Road neighbours include Rebel Wilson, Colin Friels, Judy Davis and Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward.
Recent reports suggested the Louisa Road residents were “white hot with anger” over the proposal.
“I think the residents in Louisa Road are white hot with anger over the whole thing and obviously there’s a lot of very influential residents living there,” Bob Kelly, a long term Birchgrove resident and co-organiser of the Western Harbour Tunnel Action Group told another publication.
