Movember: Jono Coleman supports charity as cancer returns

Movember takes on a new meaning for TV and radio personality Jono Coleman who was recently rediagnosed with cancer and is determined to use it as an opportunity to take control of his health.

Celebrities from around the world join forces for Movember

Jono Coleman is a man on a cancer mission, determined to lose weight and be as fit and healthy as possible.

The loveable 63-year-old TV and radio presenter is also passionate about making sure other men are on top of their health, which is why he is yet again an ambassador for Movember.

But the awareness and funds he’s raising for the annual initiative take on a different meaning this year after Coleman was again diagnosed with cancer.

“Nearly all of the money they raise for Movember goes into drug trials for different things so I am basically practising what I preach,” he told Confidential.

“Apart from getting rid of the stuff out of my bones with the chemotherapy and radiotherapy people know about, I am also going on this blocking trial drug that is one of the things that Movember fund. So being a Movember person, I am actually being helped by money that I raise and the money that thousands of other people raise around Australia so I am actually a guinea pig for Movember.”

It was during a routine check up earlier this year that Coleman found out the cancer had spread to his back and shoulder after his initial diagnosis in June 2017.

“Every couple of months you have tests to see if everything is all right and it has kind of reinvented itself slightly,” he explained. “It has gone from the prostate and there’s some spots in my lower back and up in my shoulders. Now it has come back but it is treatable and we are starting all over again.”

Always upbeat, Coleman is determined to remain positive about his prognosis as he again prepares to undergo chemotherapy. He’s also used the diagnosis as an opportunity to take control of his health. With the help of Dr Peter Brukner and under the guidance of TV presenter friend Barry Dubois, himself battling cancer, he has lost 22.5kgs to now weigh 99.5kgs.

“I was disappointed when I found out it returned,” he said. “But I am a positive person so I was like, ‘right, what do we have to do?’ It is fightable but annoying. I have lost weight and I have got my fitness together and feel very positive about my future. I am in really good hands. If this was 10 or 20 years ago, it would be a different story.”
