Adelaide indie rock trio Horror My Friend were the big winners at last night’s South Australian Music Awards, collecting three gongs at the gala ceremony.
The band walked away with awards for Best Group, Best Song and Best Video, and also treated guests to a rousing live performance in Bonython Hall.
Other big winners included singer-songwriter Jess Day (Best New Artist), dance duo Electric Fields (Best Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Artist) and soul singer Adrian Eagle (Best Solo Artist).
In the People’s Choice category, Ollie English took home the Blues and Roots award for the second year running, The Cut Snakes won the Country category, SONS OF ZÖKU took out the Experimental award and Ukulele Death Squad snagged the Folk award.
Rising stars Wing Defence grabbed the Punk gong, Wanderers won Soul/Funk/RnB taking out their second People’s Choice award, and Adam Page won his fourth SAM Award in the Jazz category (previously a winner in Jazz and World Music categories). Music SA chief executive Lisa Bishop said the state’s music scene was in a good place.
“Our music industry is thriving at the moment and the South Australian Music Awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate the efforts of those on stage, off stage and behind the scenes,” she said.
“I am so proud of all our nominees, finalists and winners. They are the reason we continue to flourish as a UNESCO City of Music and why Adelaide is well known as a breeding ground for world class artists and industry professionals.”
