Adelaide’s Boy Wonder of Berlin Hans is gunning to take out America’s Got Talent: The Champions with his execution of the hit Bang Bang and may even be eyeing off the top job in the US.
Hans’ performance of the Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minajsong has won him a place in the competition’s top 10.
The alter-ego of Sunday Mail columnist, Adelaide-born Matt Gilbertson, Hans was one of 12 semi-finalists vying for a spot.
Hans kicked off his performance with a press conference where he officially launched his campaign to win by dedicating a “German singalong” to Heidi Klum.
Accompanying himself on the accordion, Hans serenaded the German-born supermodel AGT judge with Danke Schoen before launching into his rendition of Bang Bang.
It included his signature move – doing the splits across two chairs.
While Hans secured his spot thanks to superfans’ votes, the judges were backing him all the way.
Donning a pink baseball cap emblazoned with the words “Vote Hans”, Howie Mandel told him “this is so much bigger than this show”.
“You are on Twitter … you are on a reality show … you got hats … you know what can happen in this country,” Mandel said, referring to US President Donald Trump’s Twitter obsession and stint on The Apprentice and Hans’ campaign caps.
The tongue-in-cheek suggestion that he had Presidential potential was music to Hans’ ears.
“Are you saying, Howie, it’s time to make America glitter again?”, Hans chimed in.
Klum was also full of praise telling Hans she loved him after accidentally pressing the elimination buzzer, while new judge Alesha Dixon, of Britain’s Got Talent fame, told him he had the “best presentation”.
And Simon Cowell, who has a love-hate relationship with Hans, admitted “I shouldn’t have loved that, but I did love that” to which Hans shot back: “Welcome back into my bosom, Simon.”
Basking in the glory, Hans – who famously competed on AGT in 2018 – says he’s not fazed by the other five finalists:
“I think the only competition really is from myself,” he says.
“As I’ve done for most of my life, I prefer not to think of others. They keep referring to the other performers as my “competitors”.
I prefer to call them my “support acts”.
