Nine News Presenter lashes out in 'catty' off-air wardrobe row

She rose to fame following “Jacketgate”, now Julie Snook is believed to be leaving the network where the infamous stoush took place.

The popular sports presenter, who many believe came off second best in the incident, is understood to be farewelling Network Nine to pursue a career as a freelancer.

When Sunday Confidential flagged the news with Nine on Saturday, they denied it.

However, this column has been told by those close to Snook that she will be leaving the broadcaster in coming weeks.

“After six years with Nine, Julie just wants to try something new,” one close friend said. “She is going to give freelancing a go. There’s no bad blood. She will probably still do bits and pieces for them.”

It’s been two years since the footage showing Nine afternoon news host Amber Sherlock berating Snook for wearing white during a panel segment was leaked online.

The four-minute clip, which went viral in January 2017, captured Sherlock, who was also wearing white, demanding Snook put on a black jacket so the pair did not match.

Speaking to her producer, Sherlock said: “I need Julie to put a jacket on because we’re all in white. I asked her before we came on … Julie you need to put a jacket on.”

Snook fought back saying she hadn’t had time to change, to which Sherlock responded: “Come on I told you two hours ago.”

Broken Hill-born Snook, who is married to actor Hugo Johnstone-Burt, has been with the network since 2013 after beginning her career in regional NSW and moving into broadcasting as a radio newsreader in Canberra following a newspaper cadetship.

She began in the Nine newsroom as a producer and landed her first on-air gig presenting the network’s early morning news bulletin at 5am.

Sherlock still presents the afternoon news at Nine, as well as the 6pm weather.
