British comedian Jack Whitehall might on his first visit Down Under but he’s no stranger to Aussie audiences.

“I feel like I’ve performed in front of Australian crowds before. I grew up in southern London and one of my first gigs was run by an Australian guy at a Walkabout pub,” Whitehall told Confidential.

“It was packed full of Aussies, it was a great night.

“We have a very similar sense of humour. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and we don’t mind being a bit crude. That’s why I’m really excited about performing my comedy here.”

The popular funnyman will kick off his Stood Up stand-up tour at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre on February 5, the first of six gigs around the country.

“It’s also really overwhelming for me because I had no idea anyone even watched my stuff over. For I knew, I thought I might be performing in a shed in front ten people,” he said.

“I’m really excited to be performing in slightly bigger sheds with slightly more people.”

Whitehall’s also taking the opportunity to film a new season of his Netflix show, Travels With My Father, in Australia, with his dad Michael.

The travel-doco series sees the father-son pair explore regions of the world. Whitehall said they’ve been busy shooting in Sydney, Brisbane and the Northern Territory over the past couple of weeks.

“He’s having a great time. He’s a huge cricket fan and he loves his wine, so he’s absolutely loving it,” he said.

“We’re going to the Big Bash... I’m not sure what he’s going to be of it to be honest. But it’s going to be fun, a clash of cultures.”

The comedian also dabbles in acting, starring alongside Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley and Morgan Freeman in 2018’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and he’s set to feature in Disney’s upcoming movie Jungle Cruise opposite Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Whitehall said sharing the screen with Oscar-winning actress Mirren was a career highlight so far.

“Any time you get to work with someone like Helen, it’s an exciting experience. I learned a lot from her,” he said.

“Helen’s a legend of the big screen, how she carries herself is inspiring. She’s very humble and funny. She’s got a great sense of humour.”
