Adelaide’s Bachelorette contender Alex McKay ensured his mother Ilona had the “best birthday ever” as he made an unexpected visit home this weekend.
Now based in Queensland, the 26-year old landscaper and footballer - who’s vying for the heart of Angie Kent on Ten’s dating show - jetted into town to celebrate with the woman he describes as his “number one supporter”.
“Mum was so surprised when I walked in the door with flowers, she was rapt,” said McKay, who surprised Ilona at her workplace, Illusion Hair Body Makeup in Surry Downs.
“We’ve been through a bit as a family, those sort of events make you tighter and tighter. I’m super grateful for mum, we have a really good relationship. She’s my number one fan for sure.”
McKay’s father Mark passed away from cancer in 2017, leaving behind wife Ilona, Alex and his twin brother Zak, and older brother Mitch.
A stunned Ilona, who’s turning 58, said Alex’s unscheduled trip home made her birthday extra special.
“It was great, it’s been the best birthday ever,” she said.
“He’s just amazing... just perfect. He’s a good lad, what you see is what you get.”
Ilona admited she was shocked when McKay - who’s never had a serious girlfriend - told her he was going on Ten’s popular dating show. But she’s already given Bachelorette Kent her tick of approval.
“I like her a lot. I thought she’d be a good match for him, with his personality and hers,” she said.
“He’s been pretty busy with footy and work so it’s understandable (that he’s single). Once he does get into a relationship, it’s going to be something special.”
McKay, who plays footy on the Gold Coast in the QAFL, added: “She definitely wants a baby soon. Mum’s super excited as much as I am to hopefully find someone soon.”
As for his shaggy mop of hair, McKay confirmed he hasn’t visited a hair salon in about eight years.
“It would be a terrible advertisement for my mum if she did look after my hair... it’s out of control. I don’t let her or anyone near my hair,” he laughed.
