There are few bigger support slots in the world than opening for pop superstar Ed Sheeran, and Adelaide sister band Germein is just one step away from that coveted position.
Georgia, Ella and Clara Germein, currently based in the UK, entered a contest to play before Sheeran’s closing show of his current Divide world tour in Ipswich.
The band made the cut from a field of hundreds of hopefuls to make a shortlist of 30, before progressing to the final field of just six unsigned acts.
Should the sisters get the nod at Friday night’s final in Norwich, they’ll land a 20-minute support slot before the final show of the biggest tour in pop music history.
Earlier this month Sheeran’s tour had grossed US$739 million, surpassing a long-held tour revenue record held by U2. The Australian leg of the tour sold more than one million tickets, breaking the attendance record set by Dire Straits on their 1986 Brothers in Arms tour.
“We are very, very excited to be part of the final six finalists in the Hoax Live Sessions competition and to be in the running to open for the amazingly talented Ed Sheeran,” Georgia Germein said.
“Actually, we’re beyond excited to be part of it all.”
In other Germein news, the girls have been busy writing, producing and recording their new album, which is available at www.germeinsisters.com.
“We realised it was time to take control for ourselves and really start making the music that we want to make on our own terms,” Georgia said.
“We decided to record and produce ourselves, and when we hit play on our new material we knew it was the musical vision we’ve had for ourselves finally coming to life.”
The girls do have experience in opening for a major act — they played 15 dates with pop group Little Mix last year — but Sheeran’s fame is at another level.
“Playing to stadiums is an experience that a band in our position could usually only dream of,” Georgia said last year at the conclusion of that tour.
“The feedback from the crowd and the experience of life on the road is something we loved and we can’t wait to do it again.”
