It may not pay as well as its more glamorous commercial counterparts Sunrise and Today, but it hasn’t dulled the interest around the soon-to-be vacant co-hosting gig on ABC’s News Breakfast.
Foundation host Virginia Trioli announced her decision last week to depart the role she took up 11 years ago, first alongside Barrie Cassidy and later current co-host Michael Rowland.
Trioli, whose departure comes just as ABC News Breakfast is pulling in decent ratings, will take over from Jon Faine at ABC Radio in Melbourne at the end of the year.

ABC is averaging about 130,000 for breakfast (that’s five-city metro figures) behind Today which is averaging 180,000 five-city metro, while Sunrise is way ahead of both at 280,000.
The official line out of the ABC last week was that no decision has been made regarding a replacement. However it’s understood there is already a list of names circulating, with auditions to follow.
Among the frontrunners are network favourite Patricia Karvelas whose star has been on the rise for some time and who won more exposure thanks to her headline grabbing interview with Barnaby Joyce on Radio National last month.
Also in the mix, Melbourne presenter Tamara Oudyn (who one ABC insider said is viewed as a “young Virginia”) as well as former UK correspondent Lisa Millar, who filled in for Trioli recently and is well liked at the network.
Meanwhile, there is some speculation that Rowland may also be eyeing the exit after more than a decade of early starts, and is said to be keen to replace Cassidy when he leaves Insiders next month.
That could see ABC Breakfast sports presenter Paul “PK” Kennedy finally land the full-time hosting gig which he handles with aplomb during fill-ins.
