Controversial broadcaster Piers Morgan has unleashed on Meghan Markle following her father-in-laws ascension to the thrown.
In light of Queen Elizabeth II’s death, King Charles III will follow in his mother’s footsteps as he becomes the Head of the Commonwealth. It’s been reported that Prince Harry was unable to reach Balmoral Castle in time to say goodbye to his grandmother, while Markle remained in London. Kate Middleton was also absent, with Thursday marking the first day of the school year for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Speaking to Today’s Karl Stefanovic on Friday morning, Morgan said King Charles was “completely baffled and hurt and heartbroken” by how Prince Harry has been treating him.
“No doubt egged on by his wife, Meghan who seems to want to take down the Royal Family,” he said.
“[She wants to] take down the monarchy and has been incredibly hurtful to the Royals and Charles in particular.”
Lashing the Duchess of Sussex’s actions directly, Morgan accused her of using her royal privilege only when it’s of personal gain.
“You have somebody who has decided to break away from the Royal Family, keep the royal titles and flog them for tens of millions of dollars to the highest bidders and use those platforms to mercilessly attack the Royals and the monarchy,” he said.
“It is incredibly distressing for those left back in the country trying to do their duty and do their jobs.”
Looking at King Charles III’s next steps, Morgan said he hoped that the Queen’s death would allow Prince Harry and Prince William to reconcile their feud. He also advocated for Markle to look to the “resilience, strength, humility, service and duty,” exercised by the late monarch.
“I hope he can reconcile his sons, I hope Meghan Markle will back off the rails now and give them some time and space for Charles to be a king and to grow as a king,” he said.
“Because otherwise the future of the monarchy is in jeopardy and for me that would be as someone who believes strongly in the monarchy, it would be a tragedy.”
In a cover story with US publication The Cut, Markle touched on her severed relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, while adding that she doesn’t want Harry to lose his relationship with Prince Charles.
“Harry said to me, ‘I lost my dad in this process.’ It doesn’t have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that’s his decision,” she said.
In the days after the contentious article was published, The Mirror revealed via a palace source that the pair had declined an invite from Prince Charles to repair their relationship.
“He [Charles] hasn’t wavered, despite the attacks which seem to be coming with increased vigour,” the insider said.
“The Prince of Wales reiterated his invitation for Harry and Meghan, and the whole family if they wished, to come and stay with him this summer while he is at his home on the Balmoral estate. He [Charles] thought it might be a good opportunity for everyone to take stock and relax, but the invitation was declined, as it has been before. Nevertheless it remains.”
