Queen Elizabeth dead: The Crown season one breaks Netflix top 10

The popular series about the Queen’s reign marched back into the Netflix top 10 after her death.

The first series of The Crown has entered the Netflix global top 10 for the week of September 5-11, it has been revealed.

The series landed in seventh position with nearly 17.6 million hours viewed globally.

The weekly post stated: “HRH Queen Elizabeth II was in the hearts and minds of viewers.

“Fans revisited Season 1 of The Crown, which entered the list for the first time in the seventh spot with 17.57 million hours viewed.”

Claire Foy starred as the Queen in the first series, which debuted to rave reviews in November 2016, alongside Matt Smith as the Duke of Edinburgh and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

The series followed the Queen from her marriage to Philip in 1947 to the resignation of her first prime minister, Churchill, in 1955.

Filming on the latest series of The Crown was halted following the death of the Queen last Thursday.

A Netflix spokesperson confirmed: “As a mark of respect, filming on The Crown was suspended today. Filming will also be suspended on the day of Her Majesty the Queen’s funeral.”

THE CROWN TO STOP FILMING

Filming of the sixth season of The Crown, the wildly popular Netflix series about the Queen’s reign, will pause out of respect for her passing.

The show’s writer and creator Peter Morgan issued a statement that the award-winning series is a “love letter to her.”

“The Crown is a love letter to her and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect,” Morgan wrote.

“I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”

Morgan, who also penned the 2006 film The Queen, starring Helen Mirren, and the show’s producers stated when the series began that they would halt filming out of respect should she die during its run.

Piers Morgan delivered a powerful tribute to the Queen saying that as a Briton he struggled with the idea of the country without her.

“The saddest and most momentous turning point in the history of the United Kingdom,” Morgan said.

“There is no one in this country or the world that has not lived the majority of their lives under the reign of Queen Elizabeth the second. For 70 years she served this country with astoundingly dedicated duty. I struggle to even imagine a Britain without this Queen.

“The moment we have all been dreading has finally come and tonight everything changes.

“Her death is an enormous blow not just to the British people but to our national psyche.

“To people around the world who don’t understand our deep affinity with this Queen, it’s as simple as this.

“Our monarchy and her Majesty are the very essence of being British.

“More than an institution, it’s an identity, it’s who we are.

“Nothing and nobody has symbolised what it is to be British more than Queen Elizabeth.

“She had an aura of invincibility that today has been shattered.

“We have to learn as a country how to live without her.

“Whatever your views of the Royal Family, wherever you live in the world you will remember this day.

“This remarkable lady was the second longest serving monarch in history. She was our Queen for 30 percent of America’s entire history.

“She guided us all through the best of times and the worst of times. Wars, terrorism, pandemics, natural disasters financial crises, whatever it was she was there, with dignity, duty, stoicism and that stiff upper lip.

“Remarkably, staggeringly, she was dutiful until the end.

“She was our greatest export and our greatest leader.

“When she died a little bit of all of us in Britain died with her.”

The celeb tributes were led by Elton John, who has a longstanding relationship with the monarchy including performing at Princess Diana’s funeral.

“She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth,” he said. “Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly.”

Rolling Stones icon Mick Jagger shared the impact Her Majesty had on his early life.

“In my childhood I can recall watching her wedding highlights on TV. I remember her as a beautiful young lady, to the much beloved grandmother of the nation,” he said.

A heartfelt tribute came from actress Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for her role as the Queen.

“I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility,” she said.

Spice Girls superstar Victoria Beckham also paid tribute to the “steadfast” monarch.

“Today is a very sad day for the entire world. I’m deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved Monarch, Her Majesty The Queen,” she said.

“She will be remembered for her steadfast loyalty and service and my thoughts are with the royal family at this time.”

Kris Jenner posted four images of the Queen during her 70 year reign with the message: “Rest In Peace, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“Graceful, dedicated, elegant, unforgettable. Today and always we will remember her as one of the greatest leaders our world has ever seen. I send my love and condolences to the Royal Family.”
