Madeleine West opens up about ‘going through a bad time’ following marriage split
Madeleine West has spoken candidly about her struggles amid the breakdown of her 13-year marriage to MasterChef star Shannon Bennett.
FORMER Neighbours actress Madeleine West has opened up about how she’s handling her split from husband of 13 years, Shannon Bennett.
The mother-of-six, who’s currently promoting her new show Playing For Keeps, has remained upbeat during a blitz of media appearances amid the breakdown of her marriage to the MasterChef star.
West, 38, was still smiling during her interview on The Project on Wednesday night, but admitted it’s been a “bad time” after Carrie Bickmore asked about how she’s been coping.
“I think the key to going through any kind of adversity in life, especially when you’re in the public eye, is always practise gratitude, kindness, respect and love for the people in your inner circle and the public at large,” the actress said.
“Because at the end of the day, I think everyone has everyone’s best interests at heart and curiosity comes from compassion.
“And respecting that, and saying, ‘Yeah, I am going through a bad time, and if you wouldn’t mind extending a bit of privacy, then I’ll still do my very best, because I still want to be an actor and I still want to tell my stories’.”
West added: “I’ve only had lots and lots of support from everyone.”
The former couple share six children together, aged between four and 12: Phoenix, Hendrix, Xascha, Xanthe and twins, Xalia and Margaux.
Earlier this month, West explained to Stellar magazine that she and her estranged husband were now focusing on reconnecting “as friends and parents”.
She also spoke candidly about the pressures that having such a large family put on their marriage.
“Having a public profile, having two high-pressure careers, having a multitude of children — and I will say they are a lot harder to train than dragons — it puts exponential pressures on a relationship,” West told the publication.
“Cracks can form, and things that we don’t necessarily plan in the beginning can happen.”
