AT first she wouldn’t even let her baby’s face be photographed but, fast forward 18 months and now Kim Kardashian is happy to sit front row at Fashion Week with North on her knee.
The reality TV superstar said she and husband Kanye West were initially far more protective of 18-month-old daughter North, The Daily Telegraph reports
“At first I was like: ‘I’m not going to Instagram photos’ or I’m going to try to totally change my life but it was really prohibiting me from spending time with my friends and having my daughter grow up with my friends’ kids, so I’m a lot less protective than I was,” she told Insider.
Kardashian, 34, sat down for an exclusive interview with Insider at the Los Angeles headquarters of E! Entertainment, the broadcaster of her hit reality series Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
As one of the most famous women on the planet, she doesn’t need to do interviews to get press. If she appears with so much as a new hair colour — Kardashian went blonde earlier this month — she’ll hit the headlines.
She’s relaxed and bubbly and, surprisingly, nothing is off limits, although her personal minder sits just a few metres away listening in and curtly tells Insider not to take a selfie with Kardashian. Which is ironic, given Kardashian is releasing a book on selfies.
“I am just so obsessed with being a mum, more than I ever thought,” she said. “Everyone has a story that they want to tell you when you’re pregnant and, for me, my pregnancy was not the best or the most fun so I didn’t want to hear any of it.
“After having her, your whole world changes. I am just so obsessed with her, me and my husband are, we wake up every day and talk about her and how much we love her. It is fun.”
Kardashian and West did their best to hide their baby in her first few months and the first shots of North were a prized coup for paparazzi.
But once they went public North quickly became a regular at events, which has drawn criticism from some quarters.
Anna Wintour allegedly disapproved of North sitting front row and Sharon Osbourne hit out at Kardashian and West for dressing their daughter in fur and using her as an accessory.
“It makes me physically sick,” Osbourne told an English newspaper.
“(North) isn’t an accessory. She shouldn’t be wearing ugly couture clothes.”
Kardashian isn’t one to buy into that debate, although she says her daughter isn’t aware of the cameras.
The one thing the family lacks is privacy, not that they are asking for any sympathy.
Like most people, Kardashian explains, they simply love spending time together doing normal things.
If it was possible to ensure there were no cameras around her ideal day would be a trip to Disneyland.
“They have churros that are to die for, I am obsessed with churros,” she said.
Whichever way you look at it, Kardashian is a successful businesswoman. But being underestimated is something she’s used to. In fact, it probably works in her favour.
“I let them think that,” she smiled. “I know that they think that and ... let them think it and go along with the joke. It really is easier.”
Social media has played a huge part in Kardashian’s rise to fame. She has a modest 29.6 million Twitter followers and 27 million on Instagram and is arguably the expert in the arena.
“I am well aware that it is a huge part of my career,” she said. The secret is to keep it real and spontaneous, she explained. “I think people just love to get a glimpse of your life. Even though we share a lot on the show, there is something different about sharing it on social media. It is more intimate.
“It is so funny because people are like, you must have Photoshopped that. I’m like, you guys, I’m standing in front of a mirror sucking in my stomach, sticking my butt out, totally trying to get the perfect angle and I’m not even paying attention when I am out and about and there’s 15 paparazzi following me.”
Kardashian is a regular visitor to Australia. She has many friends here and was introduced to the country in 2006 by Paris Hilton, who she credits with igniting her love of travelling.
Asked if she and her family would consider a spin-off series shot Down Under in the same vein as their New York, Miami and The Hamptons series, she said it was a definite possibility.
“I feel like there’s so much to do out there and it would be so much fun to get a store going and maybe open one up there and create a real business and spend some time out there,” she said.
“I would love to do that.”
Keeping Up With The Kardashians premieres on Foxtel's E! channel tomorrow at 9.30pm. Jonathon Moran WAS a guest of NBC Universal.
