Sexy, see-through dresses are fashion’s newest head-turning trend – and Hollywood’s “it” girls are behind it.
Kendall Jenner’s revealing Givenchy gown and Zoe Kravitz’s chain mail Saint Laurent dress – complete with matching thong – at the Met Gala are being credited with driving a spike in demand for sheer outfits.
Searches for see-through garments increased by 87 per cent in the past three months on fashion search engine and trend forecaster Lyst, a spokeswoman said.
Demand for sheer dresses was “up 144 per cent” globally in the week after the Met Gala and MTV VMAs – which were held a day apart in New York – she said.
After Kravitz was criticised on social media for being “practically naked” in the outfit, The Batman star – who was one of the Met Gala’s best-dressed attendees – responded: “Being uncomfortable with the human body is colonisation/brainwashing”.
“It’s just a body,” Kravitz said. “We all got em.” When it comes to sheer style, underwear is semi-optional – and meant to be seen.
Shadi Kord, co-founder and director of MESHKI, said demand for sheer clothing at the Australian label was up by 30 per cent in the past month, with the daring look expected to be a big trend for the post-lockdown summer party season.
“And we have had close to 500 searches for the term ‘mesh’ in the last 30 days,” Kord said, of the Australian label previously worn by JLo, Kylie Jenner and Kaia Gerber.
“On the back of this we have been seeing ‘mesh’ corsets in our bestsellers weekly,” she added.
“We’re continuing to maximise on the back of strong performance of “mesh” styles while designing into new shapes and customising new prints that lend themselves well to this fabrication.”
Kord said the brand was planning to expand its sheer garment range in the next 12 months.
Rihanna has also sported the sheer look recently, in teaser imagery for her Savage x Fenty lingerie show.
Dressed by Hollywood stylist Maeve Reilly, Megan Fox turned heads in a “naked” dress at the VMAs, wearing nude-coloured Mugler with a glittering visible thong as she attended with her boyfriend, singer Machine Gun Kelly.
In a red carpet interview with ET, Fox said the nearly naked gown was the Bloody Valentine singer’s idea.
“He was like, ‘You’re gonna be naked tonight,‘” Fox joked when asked about how she decided on the daring design, which also seemed to channel Rose McGowan’s iconic “naked” dress from the 1999 VMAs.
“I was like, ‘Whatever you say, daddy!’” Fox said, pointing to MGK.
