HE’S undoubtedly one of the most adored toddlers in Australia, with his chubby cheeks and baby blues making hearts melt across the country and while he may not know it yet himself, Sonny Blake is a babe in demand.
The 18-month-old’s everyday adventures — from his first hot chip to discovering his own reflection in a mirror — are followed by over 643,000 people via the Instagram accounts of his adoring parents Hamish Blake (419k fans) and Zoe Foster Blake (224k).
His proud mum and dad’s hilarious videos and cute-as-pie pictures are made even more popular by the clever captions and witty commentary they write alongside the posts.
But while Blake is aware of Sonny’s popularity, he says there is no grand plan behind sharing the photos, other than to make people happy.
“That is a weird thing,” Blake told news.com.au of Sonny’s reign as one of Australia’s most popular toddlers, “but by the same token, here’s my rationale, we are his parents, we think he’s super cute, we’re not trying to make him famous, and I’m not going to try and overly hide him because I feel like it’s normal to share a funny moment of him growing up.
“He’s a little champion, we’re certainly not the first parents to put a child on Instagram. I suppose it’s just the function of Instagram, like anyone else, you put stuff up that you find amusing day-to-day and because a lot of our day is hanging out with Sonny, naturally that’s where a lot of our laughs come from these days.”
The 2DayFM radio host says people are always commenting on how much they love seeing pictures of Sonny.
“The flip side of it is we do get a lot of people saying he’s a little daymaker and he certainly is for us. He makes our day, every minute of the day, and if you can give someone a laugh or a smile, I’ve got no problem with that.”
The 33-year-old says he has tens of thousands of photos of his “plump little housemate” stored on his iPhone, which could make for an awkward conversation when Sonny gets older.
“It’s going to be a weird thing for every kid in this generation, because I don't know a parent that has kids that doesn’t have their entire phone jammed full of photos,” he said.
“We probably have 10,000 to 20,000 photos of Sonny and that’s not weird by any stretch. Every other parent with a one-year-old I would think would say the same thing. It will be weird when kids get onto our computers and go ‘omg, you guys are f***ing losers, what did you do except take photos of me’”.
“I reckon I’ve got six photos of me before I’m 15, I don’t know what it’s going to do for this generation of kids, but they’ll be able to watch back almost every day of their life almost in a photo or a video, especially when they’re little and cute, but it would be weird to see that many photos of myself.”
Blake said he and wife Zoe don’t really discuss what they post, it’s just whatever they find funny at the time.
“It just happens naturally like with anything people post on Instagram, I think if it became a decision making process, that’s where it crosses a line from something fun to do to something deliberate.”
