Prince Harry had a “very special” reunion with the Queen after his shocking TV tell-all with Oprah Winfrey, it has been revealed.
A new edition of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new biography, Finding Freedom, sheds light on how he spent “precious moments” with his grandmother as they mourned the loss of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
The book’s updated epilogue, which was written by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, states Prince Harry shared some “very special” moments with the Queen when he returned to the UK for his funeral.
The Duke of Sussex was staying at at Frogmore Cottage with his cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank.
Prince Harry quarantined at Frogmore after arriving from Los Angeles for Prince Philip’s funeral.
According to the biography, while Harry spent most of his time after the funeral he also had some time with the Queen.
“To see each other after so long apart, the longest he hadn’t seen the Queen for, was very special,” a source told Scobie and Durand.
“Despite everything that has happened, he has the utmost love and respect for her. Her life of duty and service is one of the many ways in which she has inspired him to also serve.”
The late Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral also marked the first time Prince Harry and Prince William had seen each other since March last year, when they attended a Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.
Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan, was not at the funeral as she was too pregnant to fly with their second child, a daughter they named Lilibet.
The new edition also said the Sussexes had “no regrets” about leaving the royal family and that Meghan found her explosive Oprah interview “cathartic” and “liberating”.
The new updated biography was released on August 31 on the 24th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.
The new detail comes after the latest edition of the Sussexes’ biography claimed that the couple considered naming the royal family member who raised “concerns and conversations about how dark (their son’s) skin might be when he’s born” in their bombshell Oprah interview.
Prince Harry and Meghan ultimately declined to identify the relative they accused of making the racist remarks when pressed by the talk show queen, but, according to the authors of Finding Freedom – now with the addition of an epilogue due for publication by Harper Collins – they did contemplate “sharing this detail” before deciding against it.
“I think that would be very damaging to them,” Meghan Markle told Oprah during the interview earlier this year.
Oprah later followed up with Harry about the conversation, who was more reluctant to open up about the incident, adding, “That conversation I’m never going to share, but at the time, it was awkward. I was a bit shocked”.
Harry and Meghan clarified after the interview that it was neither the Queen nor the late Prince Philip who made the remarks.
Buckingham Palace responded with a statement at the time, saying: “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately”.
The new chapter also includes claims that members of the royal family were “quietly pleased” that the Duchess of Sussex missed Prince Philip’s funeral because they “didn’t want a circus” caused by “the Duchess creating a spectacle” if she attended.
Meghan also hoped to accompany Harry, but as she was heavily pregnant with their daughter, her doctors wouldn’t give her medical clearance to fly.
According to the book, the Queen was pleased to hear she would be reunited with her beloved grandson Harry. She had missed him and always made clear that he was first and foremost “a beloved member of my family”, it claims.
Harry and Meghan have repeatedly insisted that Finding Freedom was unauthorised and that they had not offered any co-operation.
However, the authors – Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand – are known to be close to the couple.
