THE rapper DMX is being investigated for possibly robbing a fan who approached him at a gas station in New Jersey early Sunday, officials said.

The 21-year-old victim told police he approached the hip-hop star after recognising him as he and his entourage were filling up at an Exxon station on Highway 21 around 12:30am, according to Newark police.

The two had a brief conversation about rap music before someone in the crew walked up, showed the man a gun and demanded he hand over all his money, police said.

When the fan did as he was told, that’s when DMX allegedly snatched a wad of bills worth $3,200 ($4,188 AUD), according to Sgt. Ronald Glover, a Newark Police spokesman.

The rapper then hopped in one of the four black Cadillac Escalades his entourage was riding in and disappeared.

The victim got in his car and tried to chase after the convoy of SUVs and managed to jot down one of the vehicle’s license plates.

Glover would only say that the investigation was just getting under way and that no charges had been filed.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, had just performed at the Masters of Ceremony show at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark before the alleged heist.

The show featured other raps stars such as Mobb Deep, Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick.
