Christian Wilkins has called out a “completely homophobic and misogynistic” media report about the outfit he wore to the opening day of Sydney’s Mardi Gras Festival yesterday.
Wilkins, a model and son of veteran Australian entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins, wore a pink halter neck mini dress with numerous cut outs at the Fair Day event on Sunday.
The 26-year-old is known for his love of fashion and unique style, his Fair Day outfit was no different, with commenters on Instagram praising the revealing look.
On Monday, Wilkins took to his Instagram Stories to proudly share a resulting appearance in the Daily Telegraph’s Sydney Confidential section with his 29,500 followers.
But he also took the opportunity to call out a Daily Mail headline which read: “Dude looks like a lady! Richard Wilkins’ flamboyant son Christian flaunts his VERY toned figure in a skin-tight pink mini dress with daring cut-outs”.
“It’s completely homophobic and misogynistic statements like these that causes anxiety and fear in many LGBTQI ppl (sic) – yes I know I’m in a dress and celebrate my femininity but come on … ‘dude looks like a lady’?” Wilkins wrote.
Back in 2018, speaking with news.com.au podcast Balls Deep, Wilkins revealed the difficulty he had accepting his sexuality in his teenage years.
“I think I am very confident but I think that confidence comes from having low self-esteem. I have come to a point now where I do really like myself … but when I was younger … I was a weird, arty gay kid that didn’t really fit in,” he said.
He also explained how he never came out to his dad because he was “never in”.
“I have never said to either of my parents I am gay,” he said. “I just don’t think there was ever this assumption that I was necessarily straight or that I needed to say something.”
Wilkins is no stranger to the spotlight having been on TV shows Dancing with the Stars and Filthy Rich and Homeless, an E News fashion correspondent, an actor in Stan Original series Eden, and a regular at Sydney red carpets and VIP events.
