YOU might think Chris Hemsworth is the perfect man, but he’s quick to tell you otherwise. “You should spend some time up in my head. That’s quite a scary place at times,” he tells news.com.au.
“I could give you a list of problems and issues that I have but I’d be in a much different position if me and my wife hadn’t met, in terms of my life and career. Meeting her was the most amazing thing and keeps me level headed. She reminds me of what’s important,” he says.
His wife of six years is Spanish model/actress/producer Elsa Pataky. Together they have three children, India, four, and twin sons Tristan and Sasha, two.
Hemsworth recently relocated his photogenic family to Bryon Bay after spending several years living in Los Angeles. He and Elsa are having the time of their lives here.
“We both love it. We loved our time in LA as well, but we just got to a point when we didn’t need to be there as much for meetings. A lot of our work was somewhere else anyway and so I wanted my kids to experience what I had growing up. It was always my first choice to move back once we had kids,” he explains.
“Elsa loves it so it was a very easy transition. We talked about living in Melbourne, but she’s not fond of living in the colder weather so that took us further north,” he grins. “It’s easily the best decision we made.”
It certainly sounds like Hemsworth is living an idyllic life, despite what may or may not be going on in his head. “I think the lifestyle we have is great, living on a beach and we have a farm set up with animals. We are outdoors 90 per cent of the time and so my daughter is extremely happy, as we are.”
On Tuesday they celebrated India’s 4th birthday, complete with a cake made by Chris, which was the cause of much swooning.
Before they met, Elsa was in a relationship with Adrien Brody (The Pianist, The Grand Budapest Hotel) from 2006 to 2009. She met Hemsworth in 2010 through mutual representatives in Hollywood. The couple certainly didn’t waste any time and married a few months later.
He says of meeting her, “There was this familiarity. I had been in relationships prior where there was this constant sort of thing where you had to convince yourself one way or the other about the person, and analyse and question all the time. It just made sense to both of us. There was an ease between us that neither of us had had before.”
Recalling the first time he fell in love, he says, “I was probably seven or eight in primary school and thought I was in love.” He laughs. “ And then a couple of years later I went, ‘Oh no. This is what love is.’ And then a couple of years later realised it again. So it’s a learning experience isn’t it?”
Ever the romantic, Hemsworth believes in happily ever after. “Yes, I do. I know a lot of my friends don’t because maybe their parents weren’t together, but I have a different view,” he says.
“My parents are still more in love than anyone I know. So I knew it was certainly attainable. I saw their existence and thought, ‘Wow. That’s how it can be.’ But like anything, you have to constantly work at it but in the best kind of way. That’s part of the fun I think. Finding new things about each other or challenging each other in the right ways.”
Meanwhile, he will next star in the reboot of Ghostbusters and then return to action movies. “From July onwards I will be doing Thor 3, Avengers 3 and Avengers 4,” he says.
“I’m sure I’ll want a change of pace at the end of that period, maybe something simpler without competing with special effects or fantasy. I’d like to do something a bit more straightforward.”
What of the rumours he’s on the short list of potential successors to take over from Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond?
“Oh, I think every young kid or actor has loved that franchise and that character in all the versions of it. And yeah, who wouldn’t want to have a crack at playing that character? But it hasn’t sort of come up in any great detail for me,” he says.
“I haven’t had to make any decisions. But I love that world, and if there was a great script and a great director I would love to look into it,” he says. “But there’s plenty of other people in line before me.”
