Celebrities who are managed by ‘momagers’

KRIS Jenner is far from the only celebrity mama to take her child’s career to the top. Here are some other famous ‘momagers’.

If Kris Jenner’s quest to trademark the name “momager” is granted, the 59-year old will be allowed to sue anyone who uses the moniker — a mashup of the words “mom” and “manager” (get it?) — on products that could be confused with hers.

But the Keeping Up With the Kardashians matriarch is far from the only celebrity mama to take her child’s career to the top. Let’s take a look at some of the moms who at one point managed their star kids’ careers — and also have every right to bear the coveted crown of “momager.”

Donda and Kanye West:

Following her retirement from her position as chairwoman of the English department at the University of Chicago, Donda managed her only son, multimillion-dollar megastar Kanye West. She even penned a book about it, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star. Kanye went on to launch various fashion and business ventures that have made him a household name, and he honoured his mother, who passed away in 2007, with the 2005 song Hey Mama.

Mandy Teefey and Selena Gomez:

The singer and actress was managed by her mother during her Wizards of Waverly Place days on Disney. Teefey moved from Texas to California, where Selena earned her first role at the age of 9 on Barney and Friends back in 2002. Although Gomez — worth a reported $18 million — fired her mama in 2014, the two still have a good relationship.

Melanie Sloan and Scarlett Johansson:

Before the Avengers siren cut manager/family ties in 2009, Sloan had been managing ScarJo’s career since her debut in the film North at the age of 9. In 2011, Johansson told Vanity Fair, “Once I got married, I felt that I needed to cut the cord.” Indeed: The firing reportedly left Sloan with no major source of income, despite the fact she manages several other clients.

Sonja and Brandy Norwood:

Sonja Norwood brokered her daughter’s first sitcom, Thea, when the rising star was just 14 years old, in addition to her first record deal a year later. Sonja, the CEO of Norwood & Norwood Inc., has guided Brandy throughout her music and TV career, and the star is currently taking a turn on Broadway as Roxie in the hit musical Chicago.

Tish and Miley Cyrus:

Tish has always played the momager role when it comes to daughter Miley Cyrus’ twerking assets. The former kid Disney star’s turn on Hannah Montana propelled her to superstardom — and now, the 22-year-old is a veritable one-woman empire with a net worth of $160 million. Miley came in like a wrecking ball — and meanwhile, her mother is still up for the ride, knocking down every barrier in sight.
