Cameron Diaz reveals how she met husband Benji Madden

Cameron Diaz has opened up about her fiercely private marriage to Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden, revealing the sweet story behind how they met.

Cameron Diaz is opening up about marriage to Benji Madden – specifically what it’s like being with an identical twin.

Speaking on the latest episode of podcast Anna Faris Is Unqualified, the 49-year-old former actress revealed she actually met Benji through his brother and Good Charlotte bandmate Joel, along with his wife, Nicole Richie.

“I met them first and then they didn’t set us up but we were in the same room because of them, and then we found each other,” Diaz said, explaining that they clicked instantly.

“I was like, ‘How come I didn’t see him before?’”

Diaz went on to discuss that while Joel and Benji are identical, they have a ton of aspects that set them apart.

“They’re not the same, they’re so different. Even though they’re twins, they’re very, very different, obviously.”

Recalling her first encounter with Benji, she said: “I saw him walking towards me and I was like, ‘Huh, he’s hot, I haven’t seen him before.’”

“But then when I saw him, like who he was, that’s what made me really be like, ‘Oh you, you’re special, you’re the guy, you’re the hidden gem in my life,’” she added.

The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Raddix, in 2019.

While Diaz, who shunned Hollywood seven years ago, rarely addresses their relationship, she told InStyle in 2019 that marriage is “hard”.

“I don’t know if I was ready (when I got married), but I knew Benji was special. He’s just a good man,” she told the magazine of their 2015 nuptials.

“There’s no bullsh*t. It’s really refreshing. I’m really grateful for him. I like doing my own thing.”

Diaz then said her marriage to Benji was “the best thing” to ever happen to her.

“My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner,” she shared. “Marriage is certainly hard, and it’s a lot of work. You need somebody who’s willing to do the work with you because there’s no 60-40 in marriage. It’s 50-50, period. All the time.”

Fans often forget Diaz and Richie are sisters-in-law, with Bad Teacher star Diaz penning a brilliant response to a tweet about the celeb fun fact last year.

Writer Ashley Fern had pointed out the familial connection, writing, “Nicole Richie & Cameron Diaz are sister in laws and I feel like we don’t talk about it enough.”

The tweet was later shared to the meme Instagram page @betches, and Diaz commented with fake shock, writing, “[twin emoji] ?!? [mind blown emoji] !!! [winky faces] @nicolerichie.”

Richie was first married to Joel Madden in December 2010, with Diaz marrying Joel’s twin brother Benji Madden five years later in 2015.

The two are close, with Richie touching on their friendship on Watch What Happens Live in 2014.

“I approve of anything that’s going to make Benji happy,” Richie said.

“I am a devoted sister-in-law. I’m happy for anyone who is happy, and I want everyone to be surrounded with love.”

When Diaz gave birth to her daughter, a source told Us Weekly that Nicole and Joel were “thrilled”.

“Nicole and Joel have been so great, and they’ve offered to help in any way they can, both now and moving forward,” the insider added. “They’re going to be a huge part of Raddix’s life – the plan is to really integrate the two families so all the kids can grow up together and be one big, happy family.”
