King Charles has extended his stay in hospital after his prostate surgery, sparking new concerns for the 75-year-old monarch’s health.
The King was due to be discharged from the London Clinic after two nights but remained under the care of doctors at the world-class facility for a third night.
He will miss full-time royal engagements for a month when he is finally discharged, The Sun reports.
The monarch’s absence from public life will be felt given his daughter-in-law Princess Catherine will not resume public duties until April after undergoing abdominal surgery at the same hospital where King Charles is staying.
Princess Catherine has remained in hospital since her January 16 surgery.
It came as a devoted Queen Camilla put on a brave face as she visited her husband for the fourth time on Sunday (local time).
She smiled to royal fans as she arrived at the London Clinic in a black Audi car, before leaving the London Clinic at 3.10pm local time (2.10am AEDT) in the same car where she sat in the front passenger seat.
A small group of royal fans gathered outside as she left the hospital to send their messages of support.
It was the fourth time the Queen has visited after King Charles was admitted for “corrective” surgery at the private hospital, near London’s Regent’s Park.
Queen Camilla arrived with King Charles on Friday local time and stayed until his procedure was complete, The Sun reports.
Buckingham Palace said: “The King was this morning admitted to a London hospital for scheduled treatment.
“His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week.
“He is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.”
As concerns grow for the King’s health, it was earlier reported that Queen Camilla warned her husband to “slow down”.
While insisting publicly that her husband was “fine”, Camilla last week privately urged His Majesty to step back from official duties ahead of his surgery.
The King performed 516 engagements including state visits to France, Germany and Kenya last year.
“The Queen has told him he needs to slow down a bit,” a royal source close to Queen Camilla told The Sun.
It is believed that King Charles took the rare step of publicising his operation to raise awareness of prostate issues and men’s health concerns.
A statement last week said: “In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate.
“His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure.
“The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation.”
The announcement came just 90 minutes after Kensington Palace announced Princess Catherine had undergone abdominal surgery.
The Princess of Wales underwent the planned operation, which is understood not to relate to cancer, on January 16.
Prince William has put his royal duties on hold and has visited his wife at the London Clinic every day since the surgery.
In another health scare for the royals, it was revealed last week that Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, has been battling an aggressive skin cancer after undergoing treatment for breast cancer last June.
