Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson and Prince Andrew are set to remarry after King Charles III welcomed the Duchess back into the royal fold, according to sources close to the Duke of York.
After Ms Ferguson turned heads during her first Christmas Day appearance at Sandringham since 1992, a friend of Prince Andrew said it was now “inevitable” the two would reunite “within a few years”.
The couple have previously indicated in public comments that they never wanted to get divorced but separated officially under pressure from Prince Philip and The Queen.
“It seems inevitable now that they will just formalise it,” the insider told The Daily Beast. “They live in the same house, they spend all their time together, they adore the children, they don’t ever argue.”
The friend added that the couple live in separate wings of Prince Andrew’s Royal Lodge and that don’t, “as far as we know”, still have a physical relationship.
“But nor do plenty of married couples in their sixties. But I wouldn’t be totally shocked if some corridor-creeping is going on,” they said.
The stunning prospect of a second act for the disgraced Prince and his loyal ex-wife comes after Ms Ferguson sent a coded message to the new Monarch that she was “feeling grateful” to be spending time with family.
“We are enjoying each other’s company and feeling grateful today. I hope everyone has a wonderful day,” she said in a Christmas message alongside an image of daughters Beatrice, 35, and Eugenie, 33.
This year was the first in three decades that the 64-year-old Duchess joined senior royals at Sandringham on Christmas Day, and follows an invitation last year to a Christmas lunch.
The warmer relations are believed to have come after the passing of Prince Philip and The Queen — who saw Ms Ferguson as “too vulgar” — and at the pushing of the new Queen.
Camilla has advocated that Fergie has been a committed mother and remained loyal to Prince Andrew, and the pair have bonded over their shared love of horses and Fergie being smart enough to “play the game” with Camilla as being the “power behind the King”, according to the UK’s Times.
The only hurdle to an unexpected renewal of nuptials would be King Charles, who would have to give permission.
“Given his own romantic history, and the events of this week, you would have to guess he would agree,” a Buckingham Palace courtier told the Beast.
“It could never have happened when Prince Philip was alive. He ruled the family with a rod of iron and he loathed her. And Queen Elizabeth wouldn’t have gone against Philip’s wishes, even after his death,” they said.
“The simple fact is that if they wanted to remarry now, they could. Maybe they won’t do so immediately, but if you look a few years down the line I don’t think it’s an absurd suggestion anymore.”
Suggestions of a remarriage have circulated for years, with Major Ronald Ferguson — the father of the once and future bride — telling the UK’s Times “Those two never wanted to get divorced”.
“It wasn’t them. It was that family. I’ll tell you about it one day,” he said, before insisting he couldn’t say anything that could be printed.
Ms Ferguson herself has told Harper’s Bazaar that they only divorced because “it’s not right for a princess of the royal house to be commercial”.
“So Andrew and I decided to make the divorce official so I could go off and get a job,” she said.
In an interview with the UK’s Telegraph, she spoke about living with Prince Andrew at Balmoral Castle as a guest of the Queen.
“He’s still my handsome prince, he’ll always be my handsome prince,” she said.
