Kat Dennings has exposed the “insane” remarks made to her when she was just starting out as a child actress in Hollywood.

While promoting her new sitcom, Shifting Gears, the 38-year-old actress revealed to People magazine that it had been a “very different environment” back then.

“There was not a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. There was a lot of extremely negative feedback and people would not hold back,” she told the publication, adding that casting directors were “very cruel” even though they’d been dealing with “a child”.

“It was pretty crazy thinking about it. I’m like, ‘How can anyone say that about a little kid? This is insane’,” Dennings said.

“For example, I was 12. I’d go into an audition and I’d do it, and my manager would call me and I’d be like, ‘How’d it go?’ And they’d be like, ‘Well, they thought you weren’t pretty enough and you’re fat’.”

Fortunately, the 2 Broke Girls star learned from an early age to disregard their judgments.

“That was my attitude. For some reason, it didn’t break my spirit. I was like, ‘I’ll show them,’ “ she says with a laugh. “I guess props to my parents, because they were like, ‘They’re idiots. Don’t listen to them.’ And I was like, ‘They’re idiots, I’m not’.”

Describing the Hollywood environment as “completely insane” back then, Dennings said she believed it to be “much softer” and “kinder” today.

“There’s body positivity, there’s inclusivity, there’s representation, and there was none of that before. It was really gross,” she added.

In Shifting Gears, Dennings stars as Riley, the estranged daughter of widowed car restorator Matt (played by Tim Allen), who moves back into his home.

Before landing the part, the actress admitted she’d felt a bit lost in her career.

“I was like, ‘God, I don’t know what I want to do. I am just feeling so crazy’,” Dennings explained, adding that she’d soon realised she wanted to do another sitcom following the end of 2 Broke Girls in 2017.

“Then the next day I got this call to do this show. So it felt like I wished for something and I got it. It just felt like a meant-to-be thing,”
