IT’S the annual gong show which brings out Australian television’s best and brightest — but who will nab gold at the 2015 Logies? We check the form.
Gold Logie
Andy Lee (Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year South America, Nine)
Asher Keddie (Offspring/Party Tricks, Ten)
Carrie Bickmore (The Project, Network Ten)
Hamish Blake (Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year South America, Nine)
Scott Cam (The Block, Nine)
Stephen Peacocke (Home And Away, Seven)
Colin Vickery: This category is hard to pick because none of the nominees have had standout years. They’ve just delivered more of the same. Buzz is that Carrie Bickmore will get her first Gold. That’s good enough for me.
Holly Byrnes: The battle of the new mums has been a great story, but I think this could be a fight between the good guys, Scott Cam v Stephen Peacocke. Go Brax!
Silver — Most Popular Actor
Chris Lilley (Jonah From Tonga, ABC)
Craig McLachlan (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, ABC)
Josh Thomas (Please Like Me, ABC2)
Luke Arnold (INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Seven)
Stephen Peacocke (Home And Away, Seven)
CV: I’m hoping the oldies have been voting and got Craig McLachlan, star of The Doctor Blake Mysteries, across the line.
HB: Luke Arnold was a sexual revelation as Michael Hutchence, but I think River boy, Brax will go back-to-back.
Silver — Most Popular Actress
Asher Keddie (Offspring/Party Tricks, Ten)
Bonnie Sveen (Home And Away, Seven)
Jessica Marais (Carlotta/Love Child, ABC/Nine)
Julia Morris (House Husbands, Nine)
Mandy McElhinney (Love Child, Nine)
CV: Offspring fans didn’t warm to Asher Keddie in Party Tricks but I still think she will win this category. Main threat is Jessica Marais whose Love Child was a winner with audiences.
HB: Marais was on fire last year, but I agree Asher should win.
Most Popular Presenter
Amanda Keller (The Living Room, Ten)
Andy Lee (Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year South America, Nine)
Carrie Bickmore (The Project, Ten)
Grant Denyer (Family Feud, Ten)
Karl Stefanovic (Today, Nine)
CV: Last year’s winner, Scott Cam, didn’t even crack a nomination this year. Given Andy Lee has snagged a Gold nom I’m putting him just ahead of Carrie Bickmore.
HB: I’d love to see Amanda ‘Killer’ Keller get the gong for her years of excellence on TV and radio. Think Carrie will win though.
Most Popular New Talent
Harriet Dyer (Love Child, Nine)
Laura Brent (Anzac Girls/INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, ABC/Seven)
Miranda Tapsell (Love Child, Nine)
Olympia Valance (Neighbours, Ten)
Samantha Jade (INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Seven)
CV: There is some fantastic young talent in this category so it’s a shame I have to pick just one. Olympia Valance has been a shot in the arm for Neighbours so she’s my pick.
HB: Ditto.
Logies frocks that rocked and shocked us
Most Popular Drama
Home And Away (Seven)
INXS: Never Tear Us Apart (Seven)
Love Child (Nine)
Offspring (Ten)
House Husbands (Nine)
CV: Home And Away’s fans will get Seven over the line, even if all the other nominees in this category are probably better shows.
HB: The INXS telemovie deserves the acclaim, but the Logie should go to Hall Of Famer, Home and Away.
Most Popular Entertainment Program
Family Feud (Ten)
Hamish & Andy’s Gap YearSouth America (Nine)
Sunrise (Seven)
The Project (Ten)
The Voice Australia (Nine)
CV: Hamish Blake and Andy Lee have both been nominated for Gold for the first time ever — which suggests they should easily take out this category.
HB: The Sunrise family ‘cult’ could be the wildcard here, but the social media support for Hamish & Andy should see them score.
Most Popular Reality Program
Big Brother (Nine)
Bondi Rescue (Ten)
Bondi Vet (Ten)
My Kitchen Rules (Seven)
The Block (Nine)
CV: If Big Brother wins I’m demanding a recount. What a stinker. The ratings tell you that My Kitchen Rules should be a shoe-in.
HB: How Big Brother got a nod demands a Greyhound Industry-style investigation. MKR for mine.
Most Popular Sports Program
Marngrook Footy Show (NITV)
The AFL Footy Show (Nine)
The NRL Footy Show (Nine)
The Cricket Show (Nine)
Wide World Of Sport (Nine)
CV: Each year I think the AFL Footy Show will take out this award — and each year I’m wrong. The NRL Footy Show seems a lock.
HB: They’ve put the dresses away, thank god, and it’s a stronger show for it — NRL by a field goal/behind from the AFL guys.
Most Popular Lifestyle Program
Better Homes and Gardens (Seven)
Getaway (Nine)
Grand Designs Australia (LifeStyle/Foxtel)
Selling Houses Australia (LifeStyle/Foxtel)
The Living Room (Ten)
CV: The wildcard here is Selling Houses Australia which is a big hit for Foxtel but I think Johanna Griggs and co will pick up another trophy for the cabinet.
HB: My wildcard would be The Living Room, but the ratings say Better Homes again.
Most Outstanding Drama Series
Janet King (ABC)
The Code (ABC)
Puberty Blues (Ten)
Rake (ABC)
Wentworth (Soho/Foxtel)
CV: The Code didn’t connect with audiences but critics gave it glowing reviews and industry insiders loved it too.
HB: Agreed, one of the toughest categories to decide, but my girl crush narrows it to a race in two: Janet King and Wentworth. One, or the other will do. Or maybe a tie?
Most Outstanding Miniseries or Telemovie
Anzac Girls (ABC)
Devil’s Playground (showcase/Foxtel)
Carlotta (ABC)
INXS: Never Tear Us Apart (Seven)
The Broken Shore (ABC)
CV: I thought Carlotta was an audacious triumph so I’ll punt for it, but don’t be surprised if The Devil’s Playground snags it.
HB: INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. Great performances and a musical romp. Special mention to DP for tackling such an important issue.
Most Outstanding Actor
Ashley Zukerman (The Code, ABC)
John Noble (Devil’s Playground, Foxtel)
Luke Arnold (INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Seven)
Martin Henderson (Secrets & Lies, Ten)
Richard Roxburgh (Rake, ABC)
CV: Richard Roxburgh for Rake.
HB: Ashley Zukerman for The Code. Here’s hoping he gets to finish his AACTA acceptance speech after being edited off air.
Most Outstanding Actress
Danielle Cormack (Wentworth, Foxtel)
Denise Roberts (Schapelle, Nine)
Jessica Marais (Carlotta, ABC)
Marta Dusseldorp (Janet King, ABC)
Nicole da Silva (Wentworth, Foxtel)
CV: Jessica Marais’ performance, morphing from teenage schoolboy to Les Girls legend, was phenomenal. Main
competition is Wentworth’s Danielle Cormack.
HB: Can we give them all one? Just cos I’m scared of what Bea would do if I don’t give her the nod, Danielle Cormack. (Sorry, Marta, darling).
Graham Kennedy for Most Outstanding Newcomer
Brandon McClelland (Anzac Girls, ABC)
Harriet Dyer (Love Child, Nine)
Miranda Tapsell (Love Child, Nine)
Silvia Colloca (Made In Italy with Silvia Colloca, SBSOne)
Troy Kinne (Kinne, 7Mate)
CV: What a mixed bunch of new talent — from actors to presenter to comedian. Talk about comparing apples to oranges. Miranda Tapsell was fantastic in Love Child so she gets my vote.
HB: This is Love Child’s award, but who? Both young women are extraordinary but I find Miranda Tapsell mesmerising to watch.
Most Outstanding Entertainment Program
Bogan Hunters (7Mate)
Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell (ABC)
The Chaser’s Media Circus (ABC)
The Checkout (ABC)
The Voice Australia (Nine)
CV: Paul Fenech snagged this last year with Housos but I doubt he’ll repeat the glory with Bogan Hunters. Micallef’s news satire is simply superb, easily the most worthy winner in this category.
HB: More peer voters probably secretly watched The Voice, but I belly-laughed watching Shaun Micallef. He gets my nod.
Most Outstanding Comedy Program
Black Comedy (ABC)
Legally Brown (SBSOne)
Please Like Me (ABC2)
Upper Middle Bogan (ABC)
Utopia (ABC)
CV: Josh Thomas’ heartfelt comedy series, Please Like Me, was nominated for an International Emmy so there’s something wrong if it can’t win a Logie.
HB: Please Like Me ahead of Upper Middle Bogan.
