In an Australian first, twelve South Australian callisthenics clubs will come together on the Festival Theatre stage to perform a “breathtaking” production including 63 dancers and plenty of glitz and glamour.
After the Australian Calisthenics Federation cancelled the 2024 national competition, elite callisthenics performers were left heartbroken with two Adelaide women deciding to take matters into their own hands.
In only six months Carly Aherne and Brooke Brown have held auditions, selected a cast and directed an hour and 40 minute show featuring dancing, acrobatics and music from iconic artists such as Robbie Williams and Lady Gaga.
“It’s something callisthenics desperately needs and we’re excited to bring this to the state and the sport,” Ms Aherne said.
“We have just been in awe of the performers and their talent should not be underestimated.”
The show, ‘A Symphony’, will also include a special appearance from star of the stage and screen, Tim Campbell who will perform a duet with sixteen year old, Ayanna Burgan-Minniecon.
“I’ve only done open mics with like fifteen people so I have always wanted to sing on a big stage and I am really excited for it to open doors for me,” Ms Burgan-Minniecon said.
“I am looking forward to Adelaide seeing what callisthenics is all about so I won’t have to keep explaining what it is to people.”
Calisthenics is a sport unique to Australia which involves dancing, acrobatics, marching, using apparatuses such as clubs and rods and free exercises.
Costumes are a big part of cali culture and with a bling budget of $30,000, the almost 450 outfits worn in the production are set to come together in an explosion of colour and glitter.
10-year-old performer, Riley McIntosh-Gobbie said her six different costumes are “very sparkly” and she can’t wait to wear her favourite pink costume complete with neon fringe while dancing with her friends.
‘A Symphony’ will take centre stage at the Festival Theatre for two shows in late June.
