THE Anzac spirit shines through in Kiwi crooners the Modern Maori Quartet.

The Adelaide Cabaret Festival favourites wowed audiences last year with their Pakanga Medley – a collection of old war songs – and say it’s important to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers during their show.

“Anzac Day is a time for us to come together in NZ with our mates across the Tasman – it’s one thing Australians and NZ can agree on,” says MMQ singer Matariki Whatarau.

“For us personally we couldn’t do what we do without honouring those soldiers and a big part of the Anzac contingent were the Maori soldiers.

“They used music, singing and composed their own songs to keep up the spirits of the soldiers while serving and also for those soldiers who returned home.”

The surprise smash hit of last year’s cabaret festival, the quartet – also featuring James Tito, Maaka Pohatu and Matu Ngaropo – is returning to Adelaide with an all-new show called Two Worlds, exploring what it means to be Maori in this day and age.

“This new show is more of a theatre show, a play with songs. It’s still us being as cheeky as ever but with a bit more considered story telling behind it,” says Matariki.

“We focus on four archetypal Maori men from recent history and the struggles they went through to be able to do what we do now.

“One of them is a WWII veteran. We also explore near loss of our language and how we overcame that as a people.”
