Get ready for a summer of jorts

If you haven’t thought about jorts an awful lot lately,  well other than Channing Tatum wearing them with as well as a glitter heart on his face to a Taylor Swift concert, then get ready. It’s going to be the summer of jorts!

The thing about jorts in 2023, ask anyone but especially ask Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber and the incredibly stylish Scandi set at Copenhagen Fashion Week this month, is that they’re not how you remember them.

This time around they’re less Daisy Duke hot-pant, cut-off style and more your 90s/early aughts high school-surfer-who-dabbles-in hip-hop-boyfriend (but in a good way?!).

By that we mean just as skinny jeans have been taken over by jeans so big you could fit two people in them, jorts should be similarly loosey goosey. Wear them low on the hip and to the knee or just below (or jussssttt above).

Making you feel less like a dad at a suburban weekend BBQ (not to be confused with an internet daddy aka Channing Tatum) is all about how you style them.

Which to be fair is something that can get exponentially tricky given other suburban dad faves such as chunky sandals, New Balance sneakers and lairy camp shirts have also been co opted by the fashion set.

Some guidance though—adding a belt means instant polish, and they work well with another Y2K redux, the ballet flat. Flat boots, cowboy boots and sandals are another option. You could wear them à la Hailey Bieber with little cropped baby tees (plus socks and fisherman sandals if you’re game?). A ribbed tank top and a button-down shirt worn open is a more elevated option, and so too the Scandi street style set who wore them with long-line blazer or coat.

Just as baggy jeans can be a fun trick with more structured pieces such as a blazer or to temper the more dramatic such as a romantic blouse, jorts have a similar effect. You don’t want to look too done in them, but also without a little thought it can look a little slap dash!

There are two great things about the jorts of now to note: they suit all body types and you can make your own by lopping off a pair of wide leg jeans at the knee. Given the ways you can wear them—with a blazer, with boots—they’ll also work as a good transseasonal option as we wait for our hot jort girl summer.

Ask Channing Tatum about it, he’s already there.

Below, three pairs of jorts to add to your cart now—how you style them is your summer's oyster.
