Mark Hoppus recalled going on an “awful” date with Melissa Joan Hart over 25 years ago.
The Blink-182 singer rehashed his “tough” evening with the Sabrina the Teenage Witch star in his new memoir, Fahrenheit-182, according to an excerpt obtained by Entertainment Weekly.
“She and I had met at the Teen Choice Awards, and she must’ve found me interesting because she had her publicist reach out to my label’s publicist to give me her number.” he wrote, joking, “Totally normal courtship.”
The rock star, 53, went on to describe him “play[ing] it cool” when he called her on the phone to ask her out.
“Oh, awesome, yeah, I’ll be in LA shooting my new music video, so we should have dinner after I wrap,” he remembered telling her at the time before admitting to his readers that he thought he was being “so slick using this Hollywood industry jargon.”
“But I doubt it impressed her,” he said. “I was newly famous, but she had been famous for years.”
The All The Small Things artist then described their “awful date” at a sushi restaurant in the valley, writing, “She was very nice, but we weren’t connecting. Everything in her life revolved around acting, and it was hard to relate to her about anything else.”
He continued, “I’d ask what she liked to eat besides sushi and she’d say, ‘Well, I’m usually eating whatever catering provides on set.’ I’d ask what she likes to read, and she’d say, ‘Well, I’m usually reading scripts for work.’”
To be fair, Hoppus believed that “from her perspective” all he could talk about was music.
“We just weren’t a great match. It was tough,” he noted.
After dinner, Hart allegedly took Hoppus to her house and showed him around.
“She had a beautiful place nearby with a view that overlooked the city and a huge hot tub,” he divulged. “I thought she might be hinting that we should get in the tub.”
Instead of going for a romantic dip, Hoppus told the actress that he had an “early set time” and had to “get going.”
“She dropped me back at my hotel,” he said.
But that evening wasn’t a total failure for the rock star. When he got back to his room, he checked his cell phone messages.
“Skye had left a voicemail asking me to give her a call,” he said of MTV booker Skye Everly. “I called her back and some light pleasantries quickly turned into deep conversation.”
Hoppus said he and Everly “talked about everything,” such as where they grew up and what their families were like.
“We talked about our careers. We talked about our favourite albums,” he said. “She liked more pop stuff and wasn’t familiar with the underground punk bands that I named. She liked rock music generally, though, and that was close enough for me.”
Hoppus and Everly chatted until the sunrise, and they “realised [they had] talked all night.”
The duo would go on to secretly date for a while before taking their love public.
“I might’ve been a famous musician, but Skye was the cool one in our relationship,” he wrote.
He and Everly ultimately tied the knot in December 2000 and welcomed son Jack, now 22, two years later.
Hart, for her part, married musician Mark Wilkerson in 2003, and they now share three sons: Mason, 19, Braydon, 17, and Tucker, 12.
Reps for Hart did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
