This new six-part series created and by and starring former Saturday Night Live writer and Los Espookys funnyman Julio Torres is one for those who like their comedy a little bit offbeat. The premise has Torres – playing a version of himself – wandering around dreamy alternative version of New York in search of a lost golden earring. More intriguing are the odd-bods he meets along the way, with the stellar list of guests including Steve Buscemi, Emma Stone, Paul Dano and Bowen Yang.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON

After the fiery conclusion of the first season of this mighty Game of Thrones prequel, things are definitely hotting up in Westeros. A blood feud within the ever-squabbling Targaryen dynasty is bubbling away, while Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) Black Faction and the late King Viserys’s wife Alicent (Olivia Cook) and their son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) from the Green faction put forward their claims to the Iron Throne. The action is said to pick up just days after the season one finale, and war, shifting alliances, sex, betrayal and blood are inevitable. Excitingly, Alan Taylor, who directed some of the top GoT episodes is back for the season two opener.

Chris Brancato, part of the team behind Narcos and The Godfather Of Harlem, is the creative force behind this crime drama and it sounds like a mash-up of the two, with drugs and gangsters aplenty. It’s set in Miami’s Mutiny Hotel, in the flares-wearing, pointy-collared, generously moustached ‘70s, and follows its general manager, Cuban exile Roman Compte (Danny Pino), as he becomes the centre of a glamorous scene including politicians, models, law enforcement, sports stars and musicians – all fuelled by a blizzard of Colombian marching powder.

Quality home psychological thriller from Lucy Coleman (Hot Mess), billed as an exploration of loss, grief and the search for the truth. Alice Englert stars as photographer Jacs Gould, who returns to her home town of Port Kembla after the death of her friend. While still processing her complex emotions, she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened and throws herself out as bait, while channelling her actions through sex and the camera lens. Also stars Essie Davis, Mia Artemis and Thomas Weatherall.

But he’s back and better than ever in Taylor Sheridan’s crime thriller as Mike McLusky, the not-to-be-trifled with kingpin who keeps the peace in Kingstown, Michigan. But the gig is getting harder – and more violent – in this season as the Russian mob wants in on the drug trade in the city, setting off a literally explosive turf war.

It’s been more than 40 years since Cyndi Lauper exploded on to the music scene with her smash hit album She’s So Unusual, propelled by hits She Bop, Time After Time and the ubiquitous, ageless Girls Just Want To Have Fun. This documentary, from Emmy-winning Aussie Allison Elwood examines how Lauper parlayed the burst of post-punk pop energy that made her a global star into a long and respected career, as well as her commitment to feminism and advocacy for women’s and LGBTQI rights.

Eric Kripke’s superbly savage superhero satire gets even more brutal ever series, so it’s almost scary to contemplate what Season 4 has in store. Anthony Starr, who plays the venal, insecure but supremely powerful Homelander has cited Donald Trump as an inspiration for the character so it will be fascinating to see whether the former US president’s ongoing woes feed into that. What we do know is that Homelander is ever closer to having the Oval Office under his thumb in this new season, but with the dying Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) on the outs with the rest of The Boys, who can possibly stand in his way as an all-out war looms?
MY LADY JANE

History records that Lady Jane Grey ascended to the British throne at the age of 16, ruled for nine days and then was beheaded thanks to the schemings of rival contenders. But forget all that, this new series, based on the young adult books by Brodi Ashton, imagines what might have happened if the young Tudor noblewoman had kept her head and promises an alternative history filled with action, fantasy, comedy, romance, and, er, rumpy-pumpy. American actor Emily Bader stars as Jane, with a top-notch British support cast including Jim Broadbent and Rob Brydon.

Scott Turow’s 1987 legal thriller has already been brilliantly adapted by Alan Pakula for the screen, with Harrison Ford and Aussie Greta Scacchi in the lead roles. This eight-part small screen version has a similarly quality pedigree with David E. Kelley (The Practice, Ally McBeal) and JJ Abrams behind the scenes and Jake Gyllenhaal as Chicago prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who becomes a suspect in the horrific murder of one of his colleagues. In addition the high stakes courtroom scenes, it also explores sex, politics and power as Rusty fights for his innocence and his family.

Latina powerhouse Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), executive produced and stars in this multilingual dramedy. She plays New York empty-nester Gala, whose husband’s shonky dealings have left her and her family in a world of trouble from some very bad people. To escape, she, her teenage daughter and ageing her mother flee to the Spanish town that her mother had vowed never to return to 50 years earlier. And while the wine town might initially seem idyllic as they try to start anew, gossip spreads and their past is never too far away.

Show-runner and lifelong Star Wars nerd Leslye Headland initially pitched this latest small-screen spinoff to LucasFIlm head Kathleen Kennedy as “Frozen meets Kill Bill”. Kennedy’s interest was immediately piqued (as would any sane person’s) and the green light was given to explore a little known era of the franchise, set before the events of George Lucas’s prequel trilogy and said to be dealing with the rise of the Sith. In a role that Headland cryptically says “has a lot of duality to it” Amandla Stenberg plays a former Jedi Padawan, who reunites with her former Master (Squid Games’ Lee Jung-jae) to investigate a series of crimes committed against the ancient order.
THE BEAR
JUNE 27
It’s going be hard to top the magnificent second season of the food-adjacent comedy-drama, which not only cleaned up at the Emmys and the Golden Globes, but also provided jaw-droppingly good episodes like Fishes (the Christmas episode) and Forks (Richie’s side quest to the fancy restaurant). This week’s trailer didn’t give much away, but suffice it to say that the brilliant but intense Carmie (Jeremy Allen White) will stop at nothing to make sure his beef stand turned fine-dining establishment survives, even if it means pushing his protégé Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and growing team to breaking point in the pursuit of excellence.

This teen drama/romance from South Korea is set in an uber-exclusive private school, which promises to give the best education in the country – and set up by the country’s top conglomerate – and is only open to 0.01 per cent of the population. Naturally conflict arises among these future masters of the world in this school of perfect order – particularly for “the scholarship kid” – creating an atmosphere of extreme wealth and privilege, but also scandal, jealousy and betrayal.
BRIDGERTON PART 2
Part one of the third season shot straight to the top of the Netflix chart on its release last month, showing there was still plenty of interest in the ‘Ton. Season protagonists Penelope and Colin’s ongoing will-they-won’t-they was answered in the affirmative with that steamy moment in the back of a carriage after the latter realised his true feelings, but will his marriage proposal stick? There’s still plenty more to resolve, as the eminently eligible Francesca weighs up suitors while the haughty Cressida is still feeling the pressure to get hitched. Let the merry dance resume …
