Creative Photoshoppers altered the arresting image to show the Hollywood legend leaning in to everything from the Statue of Liberty to himself dressed as a woman.

Other funny versions of the image used scenes from the two actors’ movies, with one showing Travolta doing his famous Pulp Fiction dance behind Johansson, and another showing him leaning in to her dressed as Black Widow in The Avengers.

Some replaced Johansson’s face with that of Idina Menzel, who also endured a touchy-feely moment with Travolta at the ceremony. Trying to make up for last year’s bizarre gaffe with Menzel, when he called her Adele Dazeem, the actor held her chin and gazed into her eyes before she backed away.

Few social media users had any sympathy for 61-year-old, however, many of the memes making fun of his inappropriate behaviour by adding more hands or repositioning them on 30-year-old Johansson’s body.

Several made links between Travolta and Joe Biden by adding the US vice president to the scene. Biden, 72, is in the news this week for similarly “handsy” behaviour when he leaned in close to whisper in the ear of defence secretary Ashton Carter’s wife Stephanie, while her husband was being sworn in.

A slight move of Travolta’s hand barely makes it more creepy.
