AND the biggest winner at this year’s Oscars is … Australian billionaire James Packer.
While fellow Australian Margot Robbie was a clear winner on the red carpet in a stunning black Yves Saint Laurent dress, it was Mr Packer who really cleaned up on Hollywood’s night of nights.
It is understood the talent-spotting tycoon’s Ratpac entertainment company had a 10 per cent stake in the best picture winner Birdman, which picked up Academy Awards for best director and best screenplay.

Mr Packer and his movie director partner Brett Ratner also had a 10 per cent stake in the Clint Eastwood biopic American Sniper, which was nominated for best movie and took an Oscar for best sound editing.
American Sniper has already beaten Saving Private Ryan to become the highest grossing war movie of all time, taking $US400 million at the box office worldwide.
Ratpac’s Oscar success follows on from 2014 when Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, took seven Oscars and $US400 million at the box office following Ratpac’s investment.
Last year Mr Packer said Ratpac had built up a $US225 million war chest to help fund Warner Bros movie releases, including The Lego Movie which took more than $US200 million worldwide. It is an investment strategy in building a media empire that has come up trumps for the casino tycoon, who has taken 25 per cent stakes in big budget films.
Birdman tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel with four Oscars apiece during the three-and-a-half-hour ceremony that got host Neil Patrick Harris his biggest laugh when he stripped down to his undies in a salute to Birdman.
The most polished acceptance speech was by Julianne Moore, who won best actor for her role in Still Alice, which looks at the issue of Alzheimer’s disease.
