Comedian and Golden Globes host Jo Koy’s opening monologue at the ceremony didn’t land with many in the audience – and it certainly wasn’t a touchdown for Taylor Swift.
The singer was left unimpressed when the comedian took aim at her relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce and the constant spotlight placed on her at his football games during her highly publicised displays of support for the Kansas City Chiefs tight-end.
“Welcome back, and as you know, we came on after a football double-header,” Jo Koy began, referring to the NFL showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants that aired on CBS just before the ceremony.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL – on the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
The joke fell flat with only the comedian appearing to laugh heartedly as the audience politely chuckled inside the International Ballroom of The Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA.
“Sorry about that,” he added awkwardly after delivering the fail.
The camera then panned over to Swift who looked far from impressed as she pursed her lips together and took a sip of champagne.
“If Taylor Swift death stares could actually kill, Jo Koy would now be deceased,” British journalist Piers Morgan tweeted on X of the singer, whose The Eras Tour movie is nominated for a Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award.

He needed to deliver with conviction and not half ass it while apologizing before he finished the joke. @rickygervais would have killed it

Swift wasn’t the only one in the audience who Jo Koy failed to impress.
His jokes about the year’s biggest hit Barbie also fell flat, as he made a crass joke that the movie was just about a “plastic doll with big boobs.”

As the audience awkwardly giggled, the camera cut to Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star Ryan Gosling, neither of whom looked particularly impressed.
More jokes fell flat, forcing Jo Koy to go rogue and defend himself.
“I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up,” he said on stage.
“You’re kidding me right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at.”
