Kathy Bates was feeling all sorts of misery when she lost the award in her category at Monday’s Golden Globes.
The legendary actress was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her starring role in Matlock, but she lost to Shōgun actress Anna Sawai.
As presenters Salma Hayek and Colman Domingo announced Sawai’s name at the ceremony, Bates clapped for the star before staring at the camera and ripping up a piece of paper that appeared to be her acceptance speech.
But the 76-year-old quickly shrugged off the loss. After all, she has won two Golden Globes out of nine nominations in her career – a stellar career that Shōgun star Sawai acknowledged in her own acceptance speech.
“I have so much people to thank but I’m gonna keep it short, thank you to the voters for voting for me even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” Sawai said onstage.
Sawai beat out Bates in their category along with other big-name stars Emma D’Arcy for House of the Dragon, Keira Knightley for Black Doves, Keri Russell for The Diplomat and Maya Erskine for Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Bates did get some time on the stage at the ceremony when she presented the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress of a Television Drama alongside with Anthony Ramos, who also gushed about her.
“I’m just a kid from the projects in Brooklyn and here I am presenting at the Golden Globes with the legendary and beautiful Kathy Bates,” the In the Heights actor said on stage as Bates stood next to him.
“Thank you. Thank you, Anthony, that’s so sweet,” the actress responded.
Ramos also asked her what three things she would advise actors to help them achieve a long career in Hollywood.
“No. 1, money goes in escrow or you don’t show, unless it’s Spielberg; be nice to the PAs; and grab some snacks from the craft table because hotel minibars are a scam,” she joked.
The Hollywood legend wasn’t the only star who had a hilarious reaction to losing at last night’s ceremony.
Sofia Vergara also playful piped up when True Detective: Night Country star Jodie Foster beat her in the Best Actress in a Limited Series category.
“No, no! Not again! Give me one!” Vergara yelled from her seat as Foster began her acceptance speech.
It was all in good fun though, with Foster laughing off the playful banter.
Foster has now won four Golden Globes out of 10 nominations, and she was also the recipient of the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2013.
As for Bates, she has been nominated for nine Golden Globes in her career, winning in 1990 and 1996 for her roles in the psychological horror film Misery and TV biographical film The Late Shift, respectively.
