Sarah Snook has won Broadway’s top honour, taking home the Tony Award for The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Australian actress Sarah Snook has won Broadway’s top honour – taking home the Tony Award for best actress in a play.

The Aussie best known for her role as Shiv Roy in Succession, plays all 26 characters in the one woman adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

She accepted the award in front of a star-studded room that included George Clooney, Katie Holmes and host Cynthia Erivo.

“This means so much for a little Australian girl to be here on Broadway,” she said as she accepted the award to rapturous applause.

“It is billed as a one woman show and I don’t feel alone any night that I do this show.

“There are so many people on the stage making it work and so many people behind the stage making it work.”

She gave special mention to “incredible” director and fellow Aussie Kip Williams who is also nominated for an award.

In a heartwarming moment she thanked husband, Australian comedian Dave Lawson.

“The biggest thank you I can ever give to my husband, my soul’s mate you are so brilliant holding the fort down and keeping our family together…”.

She was presented the award by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter who will star in a new adaption of Waiting for Godot on Broadway later this year.

Snook is one of seven Australians nominated for a Tony Award this season.

Snook is one of seven Australians nominated for a Tony Award this season.

Fellow Australian Clemence Williams won for best sound design of a play and Marg Horwell and David Bergman won for best scenic design of a play.

Australian theatre director Kip Williams who adapted and directed The Picture of Dorian Gray for the Sydney Theatre Company in 2020 is also nominated for best direction of a play

It’s been a banner year for Broadway which recorded its highest grossing season in history, bouncing back from the pandemic and recording an attendance of almost 15 million people.

The Picture of Dorian Gray was Snook’s Broadway debut and has received rave reviews.

She was the favourite to take out the award against fellow nominees Sadie Sink for John Proctor is the Villain, Mia Farrow in the Roommate, Laura Donnelly in The Hills of California and LaTanya Richardson Jackson in Purpose.
