The abandoned Burra farm house immortalised on the cover of Midnight Oil’s Diesel and Dust album has been captured in a whole new light – starlight, to be precise – in Port Noarlunga photographer Matthew Orr’s image Diesel and Stardust.
It’s part of the month-long Shimmer photography festival taking place at venues throughout the Onkaparinga area.
Mr Orr revisited the site, roughly 3km north of Burra on the Barrier Highway, more than 40 years after Victorian photographer Ken Duncan created the original cover for Midnight Oil’s classic Diesel and Dust album in 1987, pictured below.
South Australia’s only dedicated photography festival, Shimmer will feature work by dozens of world-class artists in 24 events and 10 venues throughout the southern council region until October 11.
Hallett Cove photographer Davide Gaglio also knows how to capture all the shimmer and shine of Adelaide’s southern coastline.
Italian-born Mr Gaglio, who is also a professional videographer, was previously a sustainability officer for the City of Onkaparinga.
Program highlights include Listen/Ngawirnda, an exhibition and workshop by Arabana and Mudbura Warlpiri photographer Colleen Raven, the free Open Exposure Photo Forum, and Shimmer Across The City – a satellite installation with posters of works submitted by photographers from around the world.
Also featured is Great Australian Bight, the first solo exhibition by Hayden Richards – better known by his online and social media handle SA Rips – who is renowned in surfing circles for braving treacherous and shark-infested waters to get the perfect shot.
Gee Greenslade’s Moon exhibition explores the space of a tiny suburban garden and surrounding streets as if they were the first lunar landing.
Festival venues include the Arts Centre in Port Noarlunga, Fleurieu Arthouse, McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor’s Information Centre, Red Poles and a host of cellar doors including Hardy’s Tintara, Hugo Wines and Paxton Wines.
All elements of the festival will have an online presence in case of any tightening of COVID-19 restrictions.
