Aquaman star Jason Momoa has been spotted back in Queensland working on a campaign to rescue endangered koalas.
The 45-year-old visited Gold Coast Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for a collaboration between Ice Cream brand Nuii and charity Wild Ark.
“They flew me down here to meet with the amazing teams that are helping out with our koalas, so we can have them for the next generation,” he said in a video.
“I had an amazing time learning about them and the critical conversation they’re doing here.”
The American actor could not conceal his excitement when he touched and cuddled koala joeys.
“Oh man. That’s so cute. [It’s] a little baby,” he said.
He released a mother and a bud to their favourite tree in the hinterland with rangers after the duo received care from the vets.
The Australian species are facing threats in the wild from diseases, habitat destruction, vehicle strikes, dog attacks to bushfires.
Mr Momoa appealed for donations to help the hospital purchase equipment to rehabilitate sick and injured koalas.
Currumbin Wildlife Hospital senior vet Michael Pyne said they were grateful to have voices like Mr Momoa throwing their support.
“The work we’re doing to try and protect koalas from extinction in 2050 is so important,” he said.
“The koala chlamydial vaccine research we’re conducting alongside Queensland University of Technology is in its fourth year, but the work is far from over, and we were thrilled to invite Mr Momoa inside the hospital to see the work we’re doing and help us spread awareness.”
This came around nine years after he spent months living in Queensland to film Hollywood blockbuster Aquaman.
The high-grossing film received huge support from the Gold Coast community, with fans waiting for 30 minutes just for a selfie with him during the premiere.
