Adelaide Fringe 2017 Review: High Tea with Burl Esque

If you’re expecting to be fed cucumber sandwiches by naked ladies then I’m afraid, like me, you’ve misinterpreted the title.

High Tea with Burl Esque

Circus & Physical Theatre ****

Gluttony, Empyrean, until March 18

If you’re expecting to be fed cucumber sandwiches by naked ladies then I’m afraid, like me, you’ve misinterpreted the title.

Taking traditional circus routines and placing them in a high tea setting, the performers of local outfit Vertical Insanity Circus compete for the attention and affection of handsome waiter Burl Esque.

See what they did there?

What follows is a good amount of tease and a jaw-dropping hour of balancing, juggling and aerial work.

Giving you no time to really process the complexity of what you’ve just seen, the well-rehearsed group move from one trick to another, pulling off complex and dangerous acrobatic routines with ease and flair.

A rock-solid and fun show from some truly talented locals.
