AN hour better spent is hard to immediately recall than with flautist Melanie Walters and her exceptional solo recital The Flute Revamped.
Taking its title from the first piece, Anna le Berge’s fascinating Revamper, Walters was first class from the get-go, easily tossing off the overtones and partials that made this a riveting opener.
More surreal was Michael Oliva’s Moss Garden, with effortless lip glissandi and Jacob Ter Veldhuis’s spectacular Lipstick, both with electronic tracks.
Ian Clarke’s Great Train Race was and incredible hare-and-tortoise rivalry, while Maria Grenfell’s entertaining Four Pooh Stories featured the vocalisation across the mouthpiece of Tigger’s habitual mauling of the English language.
A rich and rare event.
