Adelaide’s favourite son of comedy, Sam Simmons, has revealed he’s planning to quit the industry to focus on his family.
The award-winning funnyman said he’s had enough of touring and his new Fringe show, 26 Things You've Been Doing Wrong, will be his last in Adelaide for a long time.
“It’s time to retire. I’ve got to be a realist, I can’t be a clown forever. I need a change, I want a change,” said Simmons, who has a two-year old daughter, Luna, with wife Rosie.
“The reality of the industry is it’s getting harder and harder. This will be my last Adelaide Fringe in quite a while without a doubt.
“I’m going off to do something normal with my life because I’ve got a baby.”
The 2015 winner of the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Comedy Award, Simmons said he’s looking at all career options, including returning to his previous job as a zookeeper.
“I’d love to be a zoologist. Or a David Attenborough type and do animal docos,” said Simmons, who used to work at the Adelaide Zoo.
Currently splitting his time between Sydney, Los Angeles and the UK, Simmons, 41, said he was still hoping to act and write TV scripts on the side.
His Fringe swansong is drawing big crowds in the Garden of Unearthly Delights and Simmons said he’s savouring every moment: “It’s really dumb, it’s really fun, come along.”
