This year’s Womadelaide festival will feature The Colour of Time dances and food by Jock Zonfrillo

THIS year’s Womadelaide will be an explosion of colour, music, dance and food from around the world.

THIS year’s Womadelaide will be an explosion of colour, music, dance and food from around the world.

Chef Jock Zonfrillo will cater for the four-day festival’s first sit-down restaurant, taking chefs out of his Orana kitchen to Bonatic Park where they’ll serve up 28 dishes that relate to performers’ cultural backgrounds.

Music fans can also take part in The Colour of Time — a choreographed parade inspired by India’s traditional Holi festival that will erupt with coloured gulal powder.

Womad festival director Ian Scobie has brought dance company Artonik out to lead the processional dance piece after seeing its premiere in France 18 months ago.

“It’s a narravitve that sees them transform from 21st century stressed workers, and by the end they have let go of all their shackles and worries,” Mr Scobie said, adding that the gulal powder would be thrown for those wanting to get “coloured” at the end.

“It’s like splashing water,” he said. “It’s a basic human impulse that brings out the child in people.”

1980s style aerobics dance group Spandexx Ballet will conduct workshops tomorrow (FRI) and Sunday for those wanting to learn the movements for the dance, which will take place at sunset.

Bookings at Zonfrillo’s Street in the Park restaurant will go for $35 a seat and prices will be similar to his Street-ADL diner on Rundle St, with main meals costing $25 and wine list also available. The Scottish-born chef said he was humbled to be involved in the event, and that the dishes would be inspired by his own travels.

“It’s not necessarily that country’s national dish, but what I remember eating when I was there — an interpretation of that,” he said. “We will be closing Orana for the weekend to be able to do it. It’s like the ultimate team-building exercise.”

Bookings can be made via the website womadelaide.com.au until the end of today (Thursday), then by phone: 0477 058 224.
