Australian singer-songwriter Matt Corby has been added to the Womadelaide line-up to help fill the hole left by the last-minute cancellation of headliner Ziggy Marley.
Marley, son of music legend Bob, announced yesterday afternoon that he wouldn’t by playing the four-day festival due to family issues, leaving organisers scrambling for a replacement act.
After the shock announcement festival director Ian Scobie quipped that there “probably weren’t many bands in Australia that I won’t be calling today”.
Corby, who will fill the same stage and timeslot that Marley was scheduled to play, has twice claimed the ARIA Award and scored an Australian No. 1 with his debut record.
He is perhaps best known for his hit single Brother, released in 2011, and has spent the past year touring the world in support of his second full-length album Rainbow Valley.
Mr Scobie said that he was delighted to bring Corby into the Womadelaide fold.
“Matt is the perfect fit to complete the Monday night line-up and we believe that he will bring something unexpected and astonishing to our closing night,” he said.
“Our gratitude goes out to Matt, his band and his management for working with the Womadelaide team to bring him in to what is already a wonderful line-up at such short notice.”.
Womadelaide kicks off in Botanic Park tonight, with performances from The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Cat Empire and Late Nite Tuff Guy, and continues across the long weekend before wrapping up on Monday night. Tickets at the Womadelaide website.
