You would be mistaken if you thought the large group of people camping outside the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Sunday night were bracing the night chills for a Taylor Swift concert.
Instead, fans slept overnight to receive the first 150 wristbands that will see them front and centre for British indie-pop band The 1975.
One fan, Jo Kloppenborg, who travelled from Melbourne on an overnight bus with a group of friends, had a self-organised ticketing system.
“We do our own self-governed numbering system which is not organised by security or any of the organisers, and we just organise it ourselves and write numbers on our hands,” she said.
“I literally came here with the sole intention of camping out to be at the front for The 1975 concert tonight.
“Luckily for me, I got number seven so we can all be up the front when the doors open.”
The 1975 is a Manchester-based band boasting 3.6 million Instagram followers and hits including I’m In Love With You attracting more than 8m views on YouTube.
Ms Kloppenborg’s friend Sarah Russell said “everyone was really chill” as they waited for hours, making new friends with other people waiting and also finding ways to pass the time.
“We sleep, sleep, we play eye-spy and usually we bring a pack of cards to play games but this time we came unprepared,” she said.
“We (also) usually just talk, chill out, just pretend we’re having a sleepover but instead we’re on the streets instead.”
Ms Russell said she and her friends had been fans of The 1975 for a long time, and encouraged anyone to experience sleeping out the night before to get a better position at a concert.
“We’ve been there since the beginning and each album they put out is just better than the last and they are really, really good live performers,” she said.
“If you think you want to do it, just do it and sleep out. Everyone is really nice.”
The group of friends said they would travel back to Victoria on Tuesday morning … to attend another The 1975 concert at Rod Laver Arena that night.
