A historic North Adelaide school is planning a major makeover and has lodged a $14 million redevelopment plan with the State Government.
St Dominic’s Priory College has applied to the State Commission Assessment Panel for an upgrade of its Molesworth St campus.
The project includes a three-storey extension to an existing building, which would be used for middle school classrooms, laboratories, common spaces and school offices.
A building that fronts Hill St would get a “new northern face”, while a group of nearby classrooms are slated to become a STEM facility.
A courtyard would be revamped, while some buildings and offices near a heritage building would be demolished to allow for better views of the school’s church.
The project would help the college meet “21st century educational outcomes”, a report by Access Planning’s David Hutchison said.
“The development will result in significant improvements to the college campus and represents a logical and sustainable extension of the college’s activities,” Mr Hutchison said.
“(It) allows (the school) to meet its educational, health, safety and welfare goals for the next generation of students.”
The development would not impact school numbers.
St. Dominic’s Priory College, an all-girls college for reception to Year 12, was established in North Adelaide 122 years ago by Dominican Religious Sisters.
The state heritage-listed Church of the Perpetual Adoration and Chapter House are on its campus.
A report from architectural firm Swanbury Penglase said the impact of proposed redevelopment on the school’s heritage was “acceptable”.
Consultation on the plans concludes on Friday, February 21.
