Wodonga region public schools that outranked the privates

A small government primary school with less than 200 students has jumped five spots to outrank private schools in the Wodonga region's latest NAPLAN results.

A small public primary school in the state’s northeast has climbed the ranks five spots since last year and outranked all other primary schools in the Wodonga region, according to the latest NAPLAN results.

Yackandandah Primary School has been crowned the region’s best performing primary school, with an average score of 514.6 – ranking the highest in the region in every one of the five NAPLAN key performance areas.

The primary school, with less than 200 students across nine class groups, jumped from sixth place last year to claim the number one ranking for 2025.

Yackandandah was the only government school to rank in the top five.

The school’s principal Michael Edwards said the results were a reflection on the support from many parts of the community.

“We are very lucky at our school, our families are very supportive – we’ve got a great school community and you can’t undervalue the contributions from families in the school,” he said.

“We’ve got very experienced teachers and we’ve got dedicated teachers that are enthusiastic and they work very hard at having great relationships with the students.”

Private school, Victory Lutheran College, in West Wodonga, ranked second for the overall average among primary schools, with catholic schools St Joseph’s, in Beechworth, St Augustine’s School, in Wodonga, and Beechworth Montessori School also in the top five.

In the high school rankings another public school topped the list ahead of one of Wodonga’s most expensive private schools.

Bright P-12 College ranked number one with an average NAPLAN score of 600, scoring higher than Victory Lutheran College – where parents pay at least $48,000 for six years of school.

The private college did dominate reading and writing, but Bright P – 12 College scored higher in grammar, spelling and numeracy.

The region’s only other private high school, Grace Christian College Wodonga, in Leneva, ranked sixth with an average score of 562.6 which was beaten by Beechworth Secondary College, Mount Beauty Secondary College and Catholic College Wodonga.

To determine how each school performed in 2025, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort – Year 5 or Year 9 – were combined and the average found. Students are tested on their reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy skills.
