The principal of a Yorke Peninsula regional primary school has been stood down amid an investigation into complaints made by parents.

The Department for Education confirmed Wallaroo Mines Primary School principal Tamarin Condon was on leave as it investigated the claims of parents, which were aired in an online petition published last week.

More than 180 people have signed the statement alleging Ms Condon – who joined the school in June – had “created an atmosphere of fear and discomfort among students, with many children expressing that they are scared of the principal”.

Allegations include “disrespectful and aggressive” communication with children, parents and staff and making children walk around obstacles as punishment.

Parents claim they and staff felt intimidated and unable to raise concerns safely, while children were “humiliated” after making mistakes, and have raised other allegations of what they claim is inappropriate behaviour.

The statement claimed more than 20 families had considered moving their children to other schools after the culture at Wallaroo Mines Primary School changed dramatically under Ms Condon’s leadership.

A Department for Education spokeswoman said some parents had been “warned” about their behaviour as it investigated the claims.

“There is no ‘secrecy’ in relation to this matter and some parents have been warned about their ongoing behaviour,” she said.

“The department is aware of the allegations and is investigating the claims. While this process is underway the principal will be on leave.

“The department takes these concerns seriously and has met with a number of parents multiple times.

“(It) is closely monitoring the situation, has spoken with staff at the school and is providing additional support to the leadership team – along with continuing to meet with parents.”

An SA Police spokesman said police were aware of the matter and there was no police investigation at this time.

Ms Condon has been removed from a list of staff on the Yorke Peninsula school’s website.

A school Facebook post in June included an introductory message from Ms Condon to parents, saying she was thrilled to be joining from term three.

“I have experience working in small country schools and truly value the strong sense of connection and support that they offer,” she said in the post.

“I’m especially excited to get to know your child and support them in their learning journey.”

Ms Condon was unable to be contacted for comment.
