Magda Szubanski sends hospital bed message to Waikerie Primary School student for Book Week Sharon Strezlecki tribute
A 10-year-old's Book Week tribute to Kath & Kim's Sharon Strezlecki has received unexpected praise from Magda Szubanski herself while undergoing cancer treatment.
Famous Australian comedian and actor Magda Szubanski has delivered a special message from her hospital bed to a Riverland student who paid tribute to her Kath and Kim character in a Book Week costume.
Annabella Wills, 10, from Waikerie Primary School, channelled Magda Szubanski’s character Sharon Strezlecki in The Advertiser’s Book Week competition.
Complete with a netball bib, wrist brace and Shazza’s signature orange bowl-cut, she was unrecognisable.
“I just wanted to say darling thank you so much for your impressionation,” said Szubanski of the costume in an Instagram video post.
“I’m in here having chemo and it really cheered me up.
“I’m very touched and that was a beautiful thing to do, thank you my sweet.”
Annabella’s mother Rachel said that the family was left “a blubbering mess” when they heard that Szubanski had seen the photo.
“When my daughter had seen that Magda was unwell, she made an
off-the- cuff remark that maybe she might see it (the costume) and it will cheer her up,” Ms Wills, 49, said.
“Our hearts go out to her and we wish it was under better circumstances.
“I can’t believe she took the time, especially just having had treatment.”
